Oh I get it now I’m trying to get the tube out instead of taking the whole inner shell Out of the 2 piece shell that I’m holding. [emoji849] duh

I guess you missed the post i put with the cat out . Yea....its a load ! of work taking out the tube or even just the cat material from in the tube.
The mounting plate your left with if you do not take the hole thing out still gets in the way and blocks off getting to the gilled opening.
I like leaving the gills in place and with a large flat screwdriver , bending them more upright. If you do not like just doing that then its simple to grind them away.

I didn’t miss your picture Simon I saw it and I guess I was still just focused on getting the tube out not realizing that you took the whole plate out. I was wondering why the tube still looked attached to the plate lol. I saw the spot welds on the tube and got stuck on that. It was late last night and I’m not even sure why started doing this last night I’ll pick up a proper bit for my Dremel and finish it when I get home from work.

You were clear I was just being dumb. Lol

No Mate , you weren't being dumb . My first cat dell on the 420/421/4300 a while back I did the same as you ! :D....thinking the tube had to come out and didnt see the spot welds thus not making the leap towards the easy way . The Stainless muffler seem to stand up to a bit of grief levering out the bit you dont want but just try and keep the border in good nick.

Just by way of a "precaution" because I guess many of us work on or own other brands of saws that use the NGK CMR6 and 7 small thread plug .
If you have for example.... Husq 550, Stihl ms 181 -211 along with some Stihl weed whackers that also use this 10mm threaded micro plug rather than the BPMR 6 & 7 most saws use then this precaution is very much for you.
You may well have some CMR plugs in stock and think they could go into the ps421/420 /4300 Etc....STOP... the CMR6 and 7 plugs to fit ..MUST.. be CMR7 A and not the CMR7H ! (or CMR6 A in some saws)
A = 9.5mm long threaded electrode shaft ...H= 12.7mm long electrode shaft.
You will be fitting a unwelcome piston stop if you get it wrong !!
Just in case your about to change out a plug on your saw for the first time.

Good to know. My mom has a Stihl ms 181c that she uses sometimes with us and I maintain it for her, and it takes I believe the CMR 6H. I think. I try to have parts trays and bins labeled for each saw.

Yes I bought my mom a saw for mothers day 2 years ago
Go Mom ! :)
Yea, CMR 6H is the NGK plug if not the Bosch plug in the Ms 181.

Yup...Thats what I see in them from factory.
Be interested what you think on the Ea 4300 once the muffler is sorted and you have given it some work.
I find the ps 420 saws when i do there PDI (pre delivery inspection) still have not really bedded in much even when i run them cutting wood for testing and tuning. 3 hrs + and they seem to gain.

Yes me too. I have about 3 tanks through it now. I'll have the muffler sorted tonight now that I have some new grinding bits. I am guessing with a few more tanks and the muffler mod it should be even better. I switched over to a .325 chisel. I should have some smaller trees to cut up this weekend with her.

If your going with the .325 chain option you could put a Ps-5105 (Makita EA5000) clutch drum rim sprocket drive on your saw. You may have gone that rout instead of going with a .325 spur sprocket already i suppose . Thats something that is nice with the 4300/421/420...it has a strong clutch due to using one from a bigger saw.

Yes I actually did just that Steve had a rim sprocket to put on. I did not know it was the same clutch as the 5105 that’s good to know.

DCS34. I love it for a cheap little saw. 14" 3/8lp and it pulls it pretty well. Minor muff mod and she rips! Only issue is it oils at idle, and can easily flood out the clutch. Not really sure if it's supposed to, but until it oils too little I'm not messing with it. Especially on a $130 saw. It starts easy enough to just turn it off when needed
