I just got another 8 from you, I love the medium size, if they were a tad taller I could grind them shorter if need be, but I am happy with the way they are myself. I weld all of mine on with a 110 mig with gas, no Flux core. Thank you for making such a great deflector at a reasonable price.

Al, you use a few of these. I seem to remember you wanted something different on the medium size?
Good morning Joe.

More height, or better yet, more height on one side. Too much height on the top side (as welded) to the flywheel side of a Stihl causes chain brake interference-mostly in the rear corner.

Or angled upward as it exits so then the exit area cross section is larger than the rear. I find myself prying them to get more outlet as shown below:

What were you using before?

Hand driven hydro press. About 10 strokes to make 1 part.

Good morning sir.

Do you have a measurement of height on the opened deflector? I'm thinking about .100" more height. At an angle (front to back) sounds like a good plan.

I plan on shaping the large size more like the medium. Shorten the taper on the back side. More stright up, and a bit more height on an angle like you described doing with the medium size.

Need to come up with a good design for a small. Some saws are too tight for the mediums. Think the small , will be more narrow, but a bit deeper. So it can be trimmed back to fit.

I can do stainless, just a little more $$

Here is my little press, should speed things up a bit.

Thinking about making the medium, and large about .100" taller. Pretty much the same dimensions just a bit taller.

I agree with the doc. Less ramp in the rear would be ok. Instead of the opening being (guessing, not measuring the actual size of the large deflector) say .375"x1.25", I'd use a bunch at .500" or .625"×1.25".

As they are, I try to pry them out further from the muffler, too. Especially on saws where it's going on the rear half, as the muffler seam often covers 1/3 of the opening.

I'm gonna need a few again here shortly, too.

Hope to see ya soon, Joe

Finished up the new "medium" die today

Pretty much the same dimensions, except for the roof is tapered. .020" lower at the rear, and .100" taller outlet than the original medium size.

Still have to get the die mounted in the press.

I'll try to get a pic of the new version next to the old tomorrow.

Broken camera pics. Pretty much the same size, just the outlet is .100" taller. New style on the left.

Cool.
Is the stainless steel flat sheet metal harder to pound?

Thank you sir.
My last question is how would stainless weld up to a regular Stihl steel muffler?
Would it be compatible?

Stainless could be welded to a plain steel muffler. May not be a strong as normal but should work fine. I've haven't tried it to know for sure.

Yes, It can be welded to mild steel. It's best to use a stainless filler but can be done with regular carbon steel filler if needed.

Cool, I always make my outlets wedged shaped. It changes the tone of the exhaust, seems to lower the frequency and makes it less harsh.
