I did take out the whole inside baffle, pulled screen and put the port on front of cover because it looked easier than on back part of muffler body. Worked out well and with the timing advanced it revs much more freely. Definitely holds rpm better in the cut than it did.

Was wondering if anyone knows if there is a high and standard output Oiler for the 038’s? The 038 mag2 is rated for a 32” bar max and the super is rated for a 24”. This super isn’t oiling enough for the 32” the pump is wide open and all filters appear good. Pump is pumping just not enough. Also on the self advancing coil it appears the 038 super was regular and the magnum was self advance coil. At least some of them were might very year to year.

I would guess the extra bar length indicated for the MagII would have more to do with the additional power than the cutting attachment oiling capability since an 056 uses the same oiler and can obviously handle an even larger bar and chain setup.

Ok was just wondering if they had different output versions of same pump with different part numbers. Does an 048 use the same pump, I have some at home.

I wasn't aware the 056 used the gear drive pump .FWIW when I do use a 32" on any of my 038 mags it throws enough oil but that's using chisel skip in hard wood .I might note in looking at the specs it appears the ignition system on the mag is indeed a self advancing type .I wasn't certain of that ,good info .

Either that or the pump is bad on a low hour saw, bar was throwing steam after 2 cuts in a 26” pine with a 32” bar. Oiler is wide open

Or there's an oil pump drive problem, obstruction at the bar (or elsewhere)....

Shop manual mentions several wear items in the assembly that could also diminish oil delivery. And an 042/048 also uses the same pump as do the 030, 031, and 032.

There might be more to it than just the pump .I think there is a filter on the end of the intake oil tube in the tank which could have clogged up . If nothing else remove the bar and chain and dump the oil then run about a half a tank of diesel fuel through it .Chain lube can paraffin up if left idle for a long time or somebody might have tried veggie which will also gum up .

With regards to the comments of advancing the ignition timing on the 038 super .I'm not so certain if that would be a benefit or not .While as noted the 038 mag had a self advancing coil it never said if it was sequential or full advance from idle .The standard advance on nearly every Stihl is 27 degrees . Now that's figuring about 9.5 compression ratio on a stocker .Something like a 10 series Mac responds to a little advance ,I'm not so sure a higher compression Stihl would .Having said that I've never tried it on a Stihl but I have on a McCulloch with good results.I guess the only way to find out is to do it .

Was wondering about the coil and flywheel swap since the saw is the same minus the cylinder and piston pretty much. Just thought might be a way to gain some power. Thought timing might be part of the power gain in a magnum over the super and not just the displacement. Maybe the compression ratio is different between them and it won’t help. Cutting .015 off the key on the super did help.

couldn't find anything for the recoil cover plate . looked at the 026 & 036 ipl. for the top cover the rivets are part # 0000-974-1000. it lists it as a 3x6 round head rivet. that what your looking for?
EDIT. looked at my 056 IPL and the rivets for the name plate on the recoil are the same# as above.
EDIT AGAIN!! The rivet for a 056 name plate
is 9441-065-1270. 2.6x6 round head rivet. so there may be a few different rivets used on different saws.
