Rambling on about this .With the amount of after market stuff it might be a thing somebody could have pirated this bearing .Maybe the seal also .
I haven't delved into this problem in several years but I do have two 048's and one 042 .One of the 048's needs a seal which I have one .In addition I have the crankcase of a 042 that cooked a piston so that most likely was a bad seal .I will say this for either model,in good tune both are good cutters .

Did some research on the 042-048 bearing and seal .The bearing is M 20-42-14 seal is 20-35.8-4 .
You can find 20-42-12 bearings .I don't know how deep the radii is cut so they might fit tight against the radius of the crankshaft and still reach the bottom of the bearing pocket
If that's possible then it would be finding a seal .Obviously the shaft size would be M 20.
I don't think this is an impossibility it's just there are not many of these models still in operation because I don't think they were in the Stihl line up very long .Why I have no idea .

That’s a goofy bearing, one would think it might’ve been hard to get a good seal on these. Definitely one way to make people buy your parts.

My uncle has an 042 it cuts well but is heavy, I was thinking an 048 top end would make the power and weight more even.

FWIW urban legion has it the 048 had the highest HP to weight ratio during that time period .No body has ever explained why the models were dropped from the line .The 028 and the three models of 038 stayed .Of course the 038 lived longer as the 380 and 381 until it couldn't pass EPA regulations .

Due to the fact it's a heat shrink fit on both the shaft and the bearing pocket it should seal .The previous bearing I looked up being 20-42-12 is sealed .If a person removed the inner seal it in theory should be okay providing it spans from the crank radius to the bearing pocket depth . It's just a stab in the dark if it would work or not .
The bearing I looked up was relatively cheap, like 10-12 bucks .If it works fine and dandy If it doesn't you aren't out too much other than the pain in the buttocks of changing a main bearing on a Stihl .< which is a pain in the rear end .Been there and done that several times .

Thinking of selling this saw but no idea what to ask. Anybody have an opinion for a starting point? It is an 041 super for sure measured the bore with a digital caliper. Saw with either no bar or a shorter one, the bar in photos is for my 064z

Runs very nice I can take a compression reading later but you can tell by pulling it’s good runs a 25” bar nice.

Wondering does an 038 super respond to a timing advance or not worth the time? Working on one for someone and he would like a bit more power. Looks like a small single outlet on the muffler so I’ll be opening that up removing the interior baffles.

Having put some soup to both an 038 AV and a magnum I would assume some enhancement would be possible by lowering the cylinder .For experimental purposes this could be done with a gasket removal and sealant in place of .Some of that series namely the 042 and 048 had self advancing ignition coils but I'm not certain if the 038 did or not .Opening the muffler up will certainly help .That's about as simple as it gets but it should produce more power without any port work .It may run at a slightly lower speed because the exhaust port opening is little longer on opening but should show an increase of lugging power .

Ok he uses it only for stumping with a 30” bar so the torque is where its at for his application.

Well the muffler on that 038 was one of the most restricted things I’ve ever seen. One slot on the side of the cover about an 1/8”x 1 1/4”. So I opened the baffle inside up and added another port to the front. Advanced the timing some “took about .015 off the key” runs noticeably stronger now. Actually pulls a 32” bar better than I expected for a 67cc saw.

FWIW I cut the baffle cage completely out of the muffler .When I get through with them there are no baffles,no deflectors ,no screens and a second port in the rear muffler section .They aren't really that loud --compared to a gutted muffler McCulloch .I might mention also you can braze that metal rather than trying to weld it .It won't get hot enough to melt the brass .
