Well now let me tell you that dumb trick of winding a saw up with a drill motor on the nut will encourage the flywheel to orbit a garage several times and Lord only knows how much damage it can in it's trip .Incoming ------[emoji33]

Oh Wow!

That sounds like a siding patch job awaiting the dare.

Worst case of mag rot I’ve seen. Crank is kilt...... 10mm 044. Bought this in a lot of three a while back. The other two parts saws we’re fine. Still plenty a good left on this powerhead. But boy that’s ugly

What causes the rot? Fuel mix?

These are McCulloch 10 series either 10-10 ,6-10.7-10 or 700 .The damned flywheels get out of balance or the clutch loosens up and snaps the key way out .

Thank you for that. How does that (resting saw on concrete) equate to the inside of the fuel intake?

It may be like the passive cathodic protection systems installed on buried piping systems. Bags of magnesium are buried along the way as sacrificial anodes. Concrete is a decent conductor of electricity and has been shown to act as a sufficient ground on things like misc metal platforms.
Never occurred to me until this post.
Heading out to the garage now.

Heard all that and more but still don't believe it.

Saws sitting in a barn on dirt do it and in sheds. Then saws sitting for years on concrete are perfect.
I have a 660 saw that rotted away sitting next to a shed down near the saltwater bay and was minty inside the motor. The one next to it was locked up and rotten inside but looked better. The good saw has holes in the case bottom and the oil tank. The crank, bearings and jug inside is mint.

Condensation happens when sitting sometimes. Condensation is bad. Condensation with salty air is even worse. Starting the saws and using them every so often is a good idea if you have a collection of saws that aren’t used a lot.
