I am trying to decide on a bar and chain for my Stihl 064, I would like it to have some compatibility with my 044.
I have decided on a 24" bar and there is on on a NZ auction site, it's a GB Professional protop with the markings 2159 J024-58P.
Included in the auction is a 20" GB bar with the markings 2900 ???O-58PA, (photo is not very clear).
I assume both bars are .058 gauge?, I have chains that I want to use but are .063.
If I buy the bars can I use them with the chains I have or would I have to buy new chains for the bars?. What are the pros and cons of using one gauge vs the other in different gauge bars?.
Cheers.

If its for a Stihl then its going to be .050 or .063 That. 058 is strictly Husqvarna

And really no pros. Running smaller narrower chain will cause it jump off and just create slop. Wearing everything out quicker

And that bar is truly .058 those .063 chains you have will bind in it. Just stick with the .063 bars or will need change your chains. I had customer here that tried that on saws I repaired and was thinking it was my repairs until showed him had three different gauges as he had about 6 saws with different bars.

I don't what available in New Zealand either that would fit your saw.

Good info, thanks.
There is another couple bars also for sale.
One is a Oregon 243RNDD009 , seller states it as a Husqvarna mount. Can I machine or fit other bar studs into the 064 to fit it?, .
The other bar is Oregon SH 203XXX DO25,.
I have tried searching the numbers and have had minimal success as to what the bars are.

I had a friend machine some oo9 bars to fit stihl for me. 84 drive link oo9 were 83 drive link after the slots were milled and fitted to stihl. 28" bar ended up being 92 links. I have a bunch of.058 ga. chain so it did enable me to use .058 on some of my stihls.
I read on another forum you can mark the top and bottom ends of the shoulder of the bar studs, remove them and grind the ends off the shoulders, then reinstall them and then use 009 bars. If you want to go back to 025 stihl mount you could reinstall the studs shimming them so the ground ends are on the sides and you will have the remaining shoulders, top and bottom where you need them, or just buy another pair of studs.

I just use the 025 bars and got the adapter from @Homelite410. Made everything easy for me. Of course I started out with Stihl stuff and have expanded in to the Jonsered

Stihl 064? Congratulations! I have one and it's a dandy. I only wish it had a decomp valve. It rips my arm off when I try to start it. Compression is through the roof and so is its power.

I use 3/8" pitch and have mostly 063 gauge bars and chain. However, what few 050 gauge bars I have also work. Take your pick. My bar lengths range between 20" and 36". This saw does it all.

I let an experienced logger who now runs 661's start mine and he said, "Edwin, this is a keeper. Never sell this saw."

Wood doctor stated it perfectly i run 20 to 28 in on my 064 have run as big as 32 in 24 in and higher i like 63 gauge the with it being a bigger gauge it stays in the bar a littler better then the 50 gauge.mine stays with a 8 tooth rim 28 in 63 gauge rs chain on it 90 percent of time it and 32 in if needed deff put elesto start handle on it.mine will still snatch cord out my hand with the compression.i will put my 064 against any stock 661 out there.mine is stock with a dual port muffler .if i could only have 2 saws it would be 064 and a 10 mm 044 with slant fin top end

Listen.....bro, wasn't starting a pissing contest.

I've owned 5-064s, and 1-661. I was just saying I think it would be a good test.

Personally I think the 661 would take it...
They are so smooth everyone thinks they are slow till you get out a stopwatch.

I ran one didnt like it.it dont like the way it feels its bulky and fat may be faster by a sec or two because max rpm is higher but i dont think it has the torque it allmost cant with that plastic flywheel.to me its like the 036 361 controversy i own both of them both with a woods ported cylinder although 361 has bigger carb and deleted base gasket both have dual ported mufflers.and my 036 will cut beside that 361 all day. And i prefer the feel of the 036 over 361 Ok so its 85 cc verses 91 cc and 3 lbs more and if 661 may be faster by what a second or two max.id much rather tote the 064 in the woods all day.

Yeah and.that one is fugging shiny too.
Lol, it's nothing minty, but it is in damn good condition. Powdered cases and recoil. Plus that new top cover and badge.

Regardless, if I had to tote one in the woods all day long, I would take my ported 661 over either of my 64s. The mtronic and a/v makes up for that 1.5#
