I played with this again today and fogged in fuel directly in the carb and could keep it running, ruling out electrical. I didn't see the screen or welch pugs but will have another look. Would it stay running with a crank seal gone feeding gas into the carb, I'm thinking yes as you are forcing fuel in instead of the saw trying to draw it in.

Yes, you can get it to stay running with a leaking crank seal manually fogging fuel into the carb. But it doesn't necessarily mean that a crank seal is the problem. Could be anything still at this point. You eaither have a fuel delivery issue or an air leak issue. If you can pressure/vac test the saw, now is the time.

I agree with Joe, you gotta get your 242 vac/press tested.
If you have those old black hard plastic seals they have to be swapped, but maybe not right now if they seal.

Those HDA 98 carbs can be quite troublesome, a 242 is a saw who is extreme, so is the correct balance for all those parts.
I've ported quite many of them and I've experience how tricky those carbs are, there is probleby a batch out of them.
But that type carb (the batch) is a perfect carb to bring out a lean scoring, and this is how it was, gotta admit I struggled.
Idle -> wot ->15.3k
Midd rpm, ie 9k -> wot, 17k

There is another thing you should be aware of, a vac/press test will show it up, but I've seen a few cranks who was under the spec dimensions, ie, bearing spinner.

Other then those things a 242 is a strong saw, strong bottom part, unlike the saws we see nowadays who hardly last a couple month hard work!

Here's mine
I got it just for limbing, kinda wishin i would of got a 18" bar for it so i wouldn't have to bend over so much. Unless i hit the lottery (that i don't play) I'll stick with the 16". Seems pretty snappy so the 242xp must be crazy snappy. Cuts darn good for a 46cc saw, cut some 10" rounds with no bogging whatsoever with .325 full chisel.

Thanks Ride Red
"If it aint got wings it won't fly"
If that trike in your avatar is a 350cc 2 stroker that is the definition of a "death trap"
I remember riding a 2 stroke 250cc trike and that thing was dangerous couldn't imagine a 2 stroke 350cc trike.

beautiful saw.
There isnt much difference from 246 and 242 XP in practice, 242 with a tad better bottom torque, a tad more snappy, and a tad more punch on high rpm. I feel the 246 has a tad more torque in the midd range rpm.
Advanced timing (shave the flywheel key) improve both saws, if you already was inpressed by how snappy your 246 was, its a thing you gotta try out!

  • Thanks Tor, I'll look into advancing the timing and would like to do it. From what I can see inside the muffler it's already gutted. I got the perfect downed tree to really test it out on tomorrow. It's a pretty large white oak w/ lots of limbs on it. It fell into a field due to the massive amount of rain we've had, 25mph gust was all it took to bring her down. 272xp will come out too to buck up the logs/larger limbs.

246 really cuts good, using the oregon lpx i think it was called? it's full chisel .325 .050 does have some anti vibration things on the rakers but yellow label. It surprisingly cut larger diameter logs well too, say 10" logs or so. Going from using a super pro 60 in the beginning of the day to the 246 I had to remember to just let er eat. She does eat when the rpm's are kept up. Today I realized why there's a lot of hype for the little 2 series.

The 246 is a great little saw. I have one and really like it. Not as much snot as a 346 but it definitely holds its own.

While we are on this chassis, I picked up this little guy yesterday, rescued it and a 340se from under a bench in a basement.
Coil is missing, but I got it freed up, and I got the 340 running already, so I have hope for it.
