Never seen a muffler like that, bet it does get hot.

yup, they sure hold the heat. Another weakness they got is total weight, and those mounting bolts to the jug also get easily loose.

All that said, cut off the cat, and it is a beautiful muffler.
There is another muffler your guys has, used up to 94-95, the one you can take of the deflector, that one is the best muffler for 242's.

A friend gave this 97 model 242 a few months back, it had thrown a chain sometime in it's life and tore the deflector almost off, kinda tight quarters but got the home made one to fit pretty well.

I have a question for you 242 guys... I have a (1993?) 242xp and I'm wondering if it's missing a "heat shield" between the muffler and cylinder? Mine doesn't have one and I'm curious to know if it should..

Not usually ....That looks like you have some of a aluminium shield in between the muffler and the cylinder.

Ok. Yes, there is a metal 'gasket' between the cylinder flange and muffler on mine. My other 2xx series husqvarna saws all have a large "heat shield" that wraps around the flywheel side edge of the cylinder and I didn't know if the 242 was an exception here or not. Thank you

Excellent news. If mine was missing a part like that...my OCD wouldn't allow me to move on until I had found one... and with a 242 that might be difficult! Thank you

42..242xp and 254xp ( 254 should have gasket as well as shield ) all have the same gasket and part number if that helps.

Yep. My 254 has both gasket and shield, and it's nice to know they share at least one part...although 254 parts are becoming harder to find as well.

Today is the day when we gone go through PTO bearings.
I used to have a few, but not anymore..
_DSC3012.jpg

slacker 543301 is their original name, Husky #501 59 40 02.
There was used one SKF bearing with Husky # 501 59 40 01, i'll see if I can get the number.
Stihl used a slacker bearing in their 020 AV Super, slacker 524453, or SKF 394764AA

I spoked with slacker Norway today, none of those bearings are in production anymore, what we find today is the amount who is left, no new bearing will arrive.
Both Husky and Stihl has quit offering those bearings also.

slacker 543301
slacker 543301 E23
slacker Z-543301

Stihl 020 AV Super:
slacker 524453
slacker Z-525453
SKF 394764AA (Stihl 020 AV Super)

Also:
slacker 525453 Z27B

I'll see if I can dig up more information for us

This is the bearing they started it up with, 133SG PTO bearing from 1980 SKF BBB 242803:

Template for gaskets.
Extract the file, it contain one jpg file who has print for 4 gaskets, print size A4.
When you print the jpg, choose "Customize to the page", dont choose "fill the page" as you will get wrong gasket size.
