I remember a no B.S. trucker in the 80's that had a hopped up twin turbo 892 Detroit that said he could pull the Mt. Shasta grade at 70 mph, no problem with 80,000 lbs. And when a commuter rail line was being installed, rumor had it that there was a large crew waiting for it, so a hotrod truck was sent up the Interstate 84 to "get it here quick" from the Ma & Pa truckers that were hauling it. I do remember a particular hotrod truck at the time that I saw squirlling around town (Portland) and by coincidence at Cascade Locks. He took off up the freeway ramp bobtail with me behind him in my Corvette, I couldn't come close to keeping up, he just walked away.

Cat 3408's were 18L and 3412's 27L. My buddy worked at freightliner for a while and said everybody would stop and go take a look at one of the very few 3412 equipt trucks when it left the plant. I gathered it was a source of pride.

ran couple 08s @ 450. thought they were slugs compared to good 06. mine dyno'd 440. always wanted to run a 12 in a truck.
seen em @ 1400 in boats. 740 in d10.

I'm guessing Cats are best at constant rpm so that might explain the slug feel. I've heard that the V8 Massey' s were dogs compared with the 6 straight cylinders. My 3116 gets much better milage when idling compared to my 5.9 but the 5.9 is better for all around drivability or frequent RPM fluctuation. Set the Cats rpm and work from there seems to be the way to go with these engines from my little experience. But damn the 12 cylinder Cat is half a 44 ton railroad engine powertrain, gotta like that.
