In your opinion, did it like the 3/8 just because or did the wood seem to have any bearing on it?
Just curious, because like you, I see plenty of frozen solid stuff and was wondering if giving 3/8 a try on my 026 would be worth it.

Well, that's a bit hard to say, no pun intended. Was just me wanting to see what works bestest. My "theory" (if there is such a thing) is that the chip is not as flexible as wood that's not frozen and has a harder time being cleared. The square cut chain was far and away the way to go having an easier time slicing. So maybe .325" square ground might fair good as well. I don't have any to try and see though.

Gotcha.
I have a ton of 3/8 loops and a 16" bar, so, I will pick up a rim for it and see how it fares.
I am currently doing some thinning out of random pine, anywhere from 3" to 8" diameter, so nothing big.

I guess all you can do is try and see for yourself and your rig what is the best set up for the task at hand.

.325 chain 8 pin sprocket
3/8" chain 7 pin sprocket

Today's cut report is an MS261C that was ported to be a firewood saw. Tried a couple different sized chains to see what worked better and the 3/8 was by far the best in the rock hard frozen wood. Could put extra pressure on the saw and it would bow up and take it quite with the extra power being made. I think it's right up there in the tops for a modern day firewood saw.

You need to do your 550 and then run them side x side...

Here's @AlfA01 Dan's Little Jonny, turned up a bit from yesterday at 14.5k. Seemed to like running here and was pulling hard. I could push and it would just bear down and take it and ask for seconds. It spools up quick and should make short work of limbing as well as bucking. Was filmed here with .325" narrow kerf, maybe I'll see how some 3/8" does on it as long as I'm waiting for the top cover to arrive.

I'm not sure what the deal is with this one. Runs like it's tight and sounds kinda funky.

My NE with the pop up is a gawdamn beast. This one doesn't run terrible but it ain't got balls like the ne. It's also ported different...so part of the learning curve I guess.

Your extension still shrouds the lowers a little. Not sure if that means anything. What are the timing numbers?

I see yours is more open. I'll cut them back some more. Left things down quite low to start. I believe it's at 109/127/78 without checking my notes.

Wow, they like the exhaust that low??? Is it a short stroke engine. I'm trying to get things to make sense to me, Thanks!
32.5mm stroke and yes they like a low exhaust. My other one can be pushed on as hard as you want and keeps eating wood. I prefer a16" .325 bar but it'll pull a 18" 3/8 with authority as well.
