So when are you gonna take these parts and build yourself a timber-slaying monster?
That may be in the works one of these days. Need to get some other projects taken care of first. Haven’t sent my 090 cases off for powder yet. Lol

Here is a pretty nice dual port mag2 muffler

View attachment 124372
Do all 056’s have this style muffler. My standard 056 has the same one, and it seems to be a early one, no chain break. And what year did a chain break become standard? Or was it always an option on this model?

They do not all share this muffler. If I recall, there are at least three different styles. Some lack the side exhaust port, and just use a front one...standard 056/av....then there are the supers/mags that had the side port..with no front port. Then the mag2’s with the 2 ports...
This is what seems to make sense to me...as it seems to somewhat follow what I have seen on parts saws...but I’m sure mufflers may have been changes as quickly as socks. Lol

Mine says its a mag II, but only has the side exit exhaust. So, it was likely cloudy the day it was built, so they decided to put that muffler on!

Still have the magnum here in the garage. Heaviest cinder block of a saw I’ve ever held for its displacement lol. But it sure does makes a nice noise and tons of torque. A cool old saw. Need to get around to putting carb kit + fuel line in it.

The saw I started this thread over still lives.
Not too long after I got it going, my furnace-A/C blower decided to self destruct.
A very good friend does HVAC, and he helped me out getting it repaired on a holiday weekend with stupid hot temps.
He was looking for a bigger saw, so in a way we traded for it. If he ever decides he no longer needs it, I will "purchase" it back.
Last time we talked saws, he said he had ran 2 tanks through it. So, it sits. A lot.
Which, is pretty much what it would do in my possession as well.

It really doesn't make much difference what brand these old torque monsters are they often spend more time on the shelf than they do in the wood .Now the SEM internal coils this model and the 2100 Husky use is a tad bit costly if you can even find one . I found one used for the Husky but the kill wire didn't work and I had to do some modifications so I could shut it off rather than choke it and it would take 50 pulls to get it started again .Try that some time on a high compression saw with no decomp .--sucks to say the least ---

I'm 100% positive I'm wrong about this, but I think .404 was invented for use on the mag II. :D
They were standard on my first 051 bought new by my Dad in ?'70 or'71 all of them he bought were 404

Yeah Jacob, me too. Now that I've got my hands on that mag II cylinder of Frank's, with the blown out transfer bridges, I'm one step closer to finding out. A big thank you to @Frank bierce for that.

I wouldn't mind seeing a stock head to head comparison with a 394/395. Same bore and stroke, flat top piston versus dome.
I could come up with a possible project saw I have a dozen or so MAG II saws in various conditions more than a few run

I was poking fun at the strength of the 056 mag.
I tried Stihl 58 Ga chain on my first Mag II in the '80's went right to 63 ga the next chain (and new bar) Yes I realize you know so much more than you tell
I appreciate your comments on Arboristsite and glean a lot from them
Most people don't realize the Mag II has 8 tooth rim sprocket to get the chain speed up and that it has the torque to back it up.

As a matter of fact that Homelite in my avatar only came with an 8 tooth .404 rim ,that's all they made for the 6 tooth OEM clutch drums .

I should have stated the Mag II came with a 8 pin rim sprocket 3/8" chain but you say " 8 tooth 404"
That is a fair size for 404 what size is your Homelite ?

The 2100S Homelite is 114 CC or 7 cubic inch .Old school PNW red wood slayer . It doesn't have a problem with that 48" hard nose bar with full comp .404 chisel .That said back in the day from what they say the 056 Stihl was a go to torquer in the days of old growth .I've only seen a few of those models .
