By popular demand, here are the Pics of the 056 Mag that I restored (before Pics, not after):

The father bought the son the saw when new as a gift. The son beat it up. The son asked me to restore it. I believe it runs today, but I have never heard the son start or run it. I have no "after" Pics, but I recall that it looked to be in good shape and I know that it ran flawlessly.

The father was on his death bed and offered to pay for the repairs. I said, "No, that's your son's responsibility." Believe it or not, the son eventually paid for the restoration (about $100), which included two new chains.

Lots of good info. Thanks guys.
Im hoping to have it in hand next Tuesday provided my friend is able to pick it up.
Then the fun can begin.
Even if it turns out to need more than I was told, I think I should make out ok on it.

One question, what bar mount pattern do these models use? I have seen conflicting info on the web about it.

Not a magnum, just a standard o56, but I love it!
That's about what the one I worked on looked like after the restoration, except I never painted it and simply redressed the bar. I was really proud of my work and should have offered to buy it then. I imagine I could have brought it home for $250 and let him off the restoration bill.

The real shame is that I don't think the guy has ever run the saw for six years. It's lying on a shelf somewhere, resting next to a flock of duck and goose decoys.

This saw is all original no repaint either! I will have to admit, she is a bit of a shelf queen

I have a minty one waiting for me at my parents in Texas, along with a few other saws (Solo and Echo twins) that the Long Haired General (aka my lovely wife) is not aware of. Looking forward to picking it up when we finish our tour in Italy in August.

Got the saw today. Fired up on second pull.
Needs the oil pump drive gear, and the "pump cover", the top handle av mount is ripped, but he threw in a bar that needs some love, a new chain, a crusty chain and the owners manual.
Time to get some parts and get it to some wood.
Not too shabby for $40..

The clutch springs are pretty seriously boogered on this, and it seems Stihl no longer makes them. I cannot seem to find any aftermarket that are specified for the 056 either. Has anyone used clutch springs off a different model with any success?

I just took a look at the clutch in your photo. LOL... what did the previous owner do to do that? Wow. She must’ve gotten a bit hot lol.

Yeah, I am not sure.
He told me that he had been running it when he noticed the oiler was not working.
By looking at the bar, I am guessing he seemed to think that "more throttle" would be appropriate in that situation and continued to lean on it until the oil pump gear shot out the side..
The clutch was off when I got it, so he may have used a splitting maul, winch and rather large tractor to extract it by the springs.
I just use an impact.
