I got a 461 in today with a stripped spark plug.

What is the best way to fix this problem?

Thanks.

An expensive ass Timesert...probably the best solution aside from a new jug. And a jug probably costs the same once you are done. 250 for the tooling on ebay I saw last, and that does not include the timesert itself.

gotta remove the cylinder head though...too many chips to leave it on the saw whilst working... just in case you were thinking of trying that...

Says WHO ?
I guy I know ports them with the heads on....does a damn good job fer who its fer too....3 for 2 and all. :)
swears the chips just blow through the widened exhaust port...

seriously....there has GOT to be something wrong in the castings with the 461 that's causing soo many stripped plug threads.
wayyyyy tooo common. never heard of this many issues with a cyl before.

Too much powa. Spit the plug right out. Probably the threads in the cylinder are stripped not the plug itself though, per the title.

I've used the inserts above and they do hold. Welding and retapping is probably stronger though especially if the head is really wallowed out.

The Heli-Coil Save-a-Thread kit works well without having to go the JB route and is well worth the money. Provides a new surface for the plug washer(s) to seal unlike a plain ol' insert. 14mm x 1.25 is what you want. And you actually can put one in without pulling the cylinder if you're careful. No drilling. Just tap it and blow it out with compressed air on or off the saw. 10 minute job.

Wow, the limited directions on my kit are way different, but I think I will use your method.

Thankfully, Matt & the guy in the store recommended pulling the cylinder. I was going to try to blow it out, and I checked and did not see any scoring. However, when I pulled the cylinder, the top of the piston is gone, so a new Meteor has been ordered.

That’s caused (usually) by free revving or over revving the saw.
But could be a number of reasons why it did that.

I think it was caused by excessive dirt in the intake and carbon buildup.

I picked up 4 saws from them today, 2 to be fixed, and 2 for parts (or payment). The 461 in the pics has a 460 filter cover, was loose, and you can see the result. (When they gave them to me, they told me they were all 460s, no badges on any of them).

The 460 (to be fixed) has a 461 recoil, and they broke off the chain break.

There is a 460 with a burned piston, and another with a beat up 046 tank handle (that is a switch). The piston is not burned, but does not look good.

While both 460s have had parts stripped, one still has an oil pump and most of the brake assembly (except the flag). So, 2 tank holders, cases, cylinders, coils, + flywheels.

He still has a whole trailer load of more saws he wants me to go through.

Btw....if you are getting that save thread...you want the short inserts...

Picked one up at the auto parts store, put it in with some JB Weld, hope it holds. I tried to go real careful, but my die did not stay perfectly straight, and my threads were mostly there, but not perfect. My first time using JB Weld, some weird stuff!
