I was surprised to find out that amongst my 2 MS440's, they are a little different.

The 2012 440 that I just got does not appear to allow the rubber gasket to fit for a K&N air filter, and the carb presets are different. The 2012 shows a preset for the H of 3/4 of a turn and the L of 1/4 turn.

The 2004 440 that I have does allow for the rubber gasket to fit, and has carb presets of both H and L of 1 turn.

Does anyone know what carbs these are according to the presets? One better than the other?
Thanks in advance for your help.

My 044 had the gasket for air filter in filter base, I took it out (it pops right out) when I swapped a newer hd2 filter in due to the hd2 already having rubber gasket and so top cover fits properly

I use them too Jason. Just figured I would try this rubber gasket. I was surprised to find out the older saw I got from you had the cutouts for the gasket to fit, and the new one I just got does not. Just curious as to why.

And Mike, both carbs HAD limiters, but they have since been removed. ;)

I will have to look at mine. I know the presets are 1 and 3/4 on mine. Not sure about the filter base.

Here is a stamp on the top of the jug. Anyone know what it is or what it means?

Mine is a 2007-2008 vintage from what I remember. I had the original bill of sale from the first owner but it has faded (stupid carbon copies). It had limiters, but doesn't now. I've never had the carb off so I don't know what's on it.

This is the 2012 saw.
I believe the cylinders and pistons are measured at the plant and designated as A,B,or C depending on slight (maybe .0002") variations. This way when they are assembled the piston and cylinder can be matched to achieve proper piston to wall clearance.

I looked at mine and it looks like the 2012 model of yours.

Jeff, the newer saws don't have the built in gasket because the new filters have it built in. Some of the old filters were metal on both sides. If you are using new filters, remove it.

The older saws said 1 turn out for both H & L, and s/n have limiters on the carb, as the limited carb can only adjust 3/4 turn out on the H. The limited carb ones say 1/4 for L, 3/4 for H, but the 1/4 is directly over the H screw, and the 440 I cleaned up was burned up by the H being set at 1/4.

As stated, the A designation is the size of the cylinder. I have only seen A or B on 044/440s. My 044 #1 is a B.

My original filter on 044#1 was a 3 piece contraption, with the main body having steel front & back.

Both your saws have the snorkel version intake, my 044 does not. (AKA Intellicarb)
