I just found this information on how Stihl gets the abbreviations for their products.

MS= Motosäge = Chainsaw
FS= Freischneider = Line Trimmer
BG= Blasgerät = Handheld Blower
BR= Blasgerät Rückentragbar= Backpack Blower
TS= Trennshleiffer= Cut Off Machine

Anyone have anymore info in this? For example what the "C" stand for in MS261 CM? I know M is for M-Tronic. Also, in the TS 500i the I stands for injektion (EFI). R also stands for Rundumgriff (loop Handle) example would be FS94R.

Edited to add that if your Stihl serial # begins with 1 it was made in Germany. If it begins with a #2 it was made in USA.

All I can add is that "C" stands for Comfort and an SN starting with 3 is a saw manufactured in Brazil.

To add to the confusion, I have a trimmer and blower with a serial number that begins with a 5 that are USA assembled.

The 2 series number range for machines built in the US had no more room. That`s why they started with new serial numbers beginning with a 5 for US made machines.

The other serial numbers starting with 1,2,3,6 and 9 mean that the machine was made in

1 Germany
2 USA
3 Brazil
6 Japan
9 Various

@DND 9000 I have a FS88 marked made in Japan but the serial number starts with a 3. Is the engine made in Japan and assembled and Brazil or vice versa?

Well, I have to say, I`m not shure where the FS 88 was made. I think the engine was made in Japan and then went to Brasil. There the FS 88 was assembeld and the serial number stars with a 3.

I`ve also seen pictures in the past from US made chainsaws with a serial number starting with a 2 (for the US). Below the serial number was written: Assembeld with domestic and foreign parts in the US. That`s why I think your FS 88 comes from Brasil, but I can also be wrong.
