So I a trying to sort out my friends Stihl FS 55 for him. He uses it a dozen times a year says it wont start so I take it.

I dumped the fuel cleaned the carb with air and carb cleaner. Put fresh gas in it and it fires on the 3rd pull (2 choke 1 off) I run it for a bit. Shut it off and restart it a half dozen times all is well. Next morning it wont start. WTF? I take the carb back off put it in the ultrasonic cleaner and blow air through it again. Starts on 3rd pull again, run it for a while, next morning same thing? Ive never had this happen with and saw or trimmer.

What does it sound like the problem is?

Thanks Matt

Sounds like sitting overnight, the needle in the carb leaks and floods the engine.

In the morning, try to start with no choke, throttle held wide open, and no playing with the primer/purge bulb, and see what happens.

Oh chit. That’s exactly what is happening. When I first got it from him I managed to get it going little bit by holding it wide open then as soon as I let off the gas it stalled. So if I actually get a rebuild kit and replace the needle all should be well?

Actually, just buy a new carb.

You’re thinking the needle seat is not machined right? Isn’t there a sealing material on the end of the needle? Could that just be bad. ?

Well, if your dealer can just sell you a Zama needle for a couple of bucks, that would likely work fine.
The carb kits from Stihl are almost as much as some of the new carbs.

I had several of the C1Qs to have the needle seat itself to leaking around outer mating surface and the the cube. The only way to know for sure if it is just a needle valve, incorrect set metering lever, or the seat is to pressure test. Just having the metering lever a tad too high can cause this leakage though as the metering diaphragm would have slight pressure on it at rest. Old metering diaphragms can also cause leakage due stiffness.

I believe I have the right metering level height But I will check again one thing that I have never done yet is properly pressure test the carburetor can you explain how to do that briefly. I have a mighty vac that does pressure and vacuum

If you don’t want to buy a new carb you can try and clean the seat with a Toothpick and some metal polish.

I don’t mind buying a new carb for the price. I just feel this one can be saved. I’m going to take it apart and put a new needle in it and clean the seat.

Did this start procedure work for you Matt? Does it work every time you try to start it?
Maybe check the tank vent too. Maybe pressure is draining fuel tank?

No just when I got it from him. After I cleaned the carb the first time and second time I used it for a while and it ran like new. It isn’t that old anyway. Let it sit for a few minutes started right back up let it sit overnight no Bueno
