Regardless of how cheap pre-made ex gaskets are, I often want one right now and as I typically work on a good variety of brands I can't conceiveby stock them all.
Also can't always count on the muffler being in solid enough shape to get a good enough mating surface to use sealer only and then have the patience to let it set up overnight.

Can get a 28"x 12"x .047" sheet of felpro 3009 for well under $10. That's a lot of little muffler gaskets...

Though its metal mesh reinforced, its still a bit crumbly to work with. Scissors are easy for the outside pattern but better off with a punch and/or nibbler for the holes and i.d.
Fine blade on a scroll saw works well also.
Can be a good practice to make the ouside dimensions a little oversized for strength/stability, usually no reason not to. That and the stock ones can get pretty thin after hogging em out to match an enlarged ex port.

Takes 5-10 minutes to pop one out...

That was what I was thinking Bill. I grew up watching my father making his own gaskets.

Suppose you get a saw that don't have an exhaust gasket?

I’ve had a muffler get loose then the exhaust gasket broke. I used the copper permetex to put it back. I have plans to use that stuff for a base gasket delete also. There may be better choices for that application but I have a tube of it still.

Ball-pein hammer

I learned how to make gaskets from my Grandmother some 45 years ago when I was just a kid, and no one alive was smarter than her in my eyes. Dang, haven't had any good scalloped potatoes since she died either come to think of it (don't tell my Wife, lol)

Not Stihl, my apologies, but still muffler gasket related.

In relation to the Dolmar PS-64xx/73xx/79xx saw family. Dolmar is selling the SLR muffler gasket as a replacement for the non-SLR muffler gasket.
I didn't know that and bought 5 to have on hand.
Once I compared the SLR muffler gaskets to the non-SLR muffler gasket I knew I wouldn't use them on my PS-6400/7300/7900.
Since I was in need of a gasket to get my PS-7300 going I made a couple myself.
I utilized a defective automotive cylinder head gasket, cut it to pieces with scissors, marked down the muffler bolt span and drilled two holes in each piece, bolted them together with a used OEM gasket on top, roughed the outer shape in on a grinder and formed the inner hole with a dremel type grinder and a diamond bur (didn't have carbide burs at the time).

I'm satisfied with the result, top left SLR muffler gasket, bottom left original non-SLR muffler gasket, on the right two home made gaskets in two thicknesses.

I have yet to see how my gasket will hold up on my PS-7300, so far it works good.

I have no liquid gasket maker at hand, I'd have to go find and purchase some.

P.S.:
The OEM gaskets have a steel core, mine do not.

Steel AM or reuse the OEM if it is there. As stated by others high heat RTV on steel or no gasket. Do not use sealer with a AM or OEM graphite gaskets. You need some PM me.

Old Jeff thread but thought I would add to it. Lot's of good ideas on here including the Ultra Copper. I did find this Fel Pro material from Napa. It is a micro perf steel sheet sandwiched with high temp material on either side. Heavy scissor trim. Dremel cut off wheel to fine tune the openings. Gonna try it on some vintage saws as most us a heavy gasket to aid in bracket support spacing. Has anyone tried this stuff or have any input??IMG_20210224_175508295.jpg IMG_20210224_175545563.jpg IMG_20210224_175601642.jpg IMG_20210224_175534472.jpg

It looks just like DG head gasket material for SBC with no coating. Silver paint or aluminum paint or copper seal RTV works good on those. If you use high-tack like shellac or spray glue you will need gasket remover imo.

You can paint one side with aluminum or graphite or coat it with RTV and glue it to your muffler on the other for easier cleanups.

The point is to keep it stuck in place on one side.
On stock saws I use RTV red or copper toward the muffler and nothing on the head or exhaust plate with steel gaskets. That looks like the same stuff exhaust manifold gaskets are made from.

Yes it is Kenny as it comes in a 28" x12" sheet. .063" thick. About $15 out the door.
