I recently attended the CT GTG, and was able to get all my saws dynoed, but that means they all came home without their bars & chains on (they were removed to dyno them).

Also at the CT GTG, Marcello (Boozer) was shocked how light my 044 was with a 28" light bar on it. That combo, with the 661 R spikes on it, is my favorite felling saw for all but the largest trees. (You can see his reaction in the CT GTG thread, page 29, post 580 - 11 minutes in).

As a result, I decided to weight my various bars and chains to aid anyone concerned about saw weight when buying Stihl bars.

I had previously posted that a 20" E bar is 8.3 oz lighter than a 20" ES bar, and that a 24" E bar is 10.3 oz lighter than a 24" ES bar. But here is some additional information for anyone who gives a crap:

20" Stihl E Green Bar

Total Length 23" Wt 2 lbs 4.3 oz 20" chain 0 lb 12.2 oz Total B&C Wt 3 lb 0.6 oz

24" Stihl E Yellow Bar

Total Length 27.5" Wt 3 lb 0.1 oz 24" chain 0 lb 14.8 oz Total B&C Wt 3 lbs 14.9 oz

24" Stihl ES Yellow Wide Nose (No longer in production)

Bar Wt 3 lb 9.3 oz Chain 0 lb 14.7 oz (older chain, more sharpenings) Total B&C Wt 4 lb 7.9 oz

28" Stihl ES Yellow Light

Total Length 30" Bar Wt 2 lb 11.9 oz 28" chain 0 lb 15.7 oz Total B&C Wt 3 lb 11.5 oz

Summary:

An E bar will save weight over an ES bar, and is the economical way to do it, as they cost less than an ES bar and a lot less than a ES light bar. But the ES Light bar really saves the weight. The 28" Light B&C was lighter than the 24" E B&C.

A 24/25" bar is 4.5" longer than a 20" bar, but a 28" bar is only 2.5" longer than a 24/25" bar, so they cheat you a bit on length with the 28".

I forgot to mention, the 20" bar is .050 gauge, all others are .063.

Hope this is helpful to anyone who is bar shopping.

Feel free to add information for other B&Cs.

I purchased a 20" Sugi, but don't even use it after I realized that a E bar was almost just as light. I thought it was going to save me a lot of wt because someone had posted how much lighter it was than an ES bar.

You can always justify another saw.

I had deets 36" es light in my hand and couldn't believe how light it was.
I run light bars on all my saws but I don't have any stihl ones, all tsumara and sugi
I've only got a 28" ES light. It's really amazing how light they feel and balance a saw. I think the Sugi's and Tsumara may be a little tougher in the long run though.

Talk to Mark!

That 20" Sugi light was a lot more than an E bar, and Mark give me great prices even on ES light bars.

This is why I use the 18"E bar on my 361 for blocking down. The other brands will last longer, but aren't lighter compared to a E bar.

A 20" Sugi is $80, what's the Stihl bars run?
