Greetings! New guy to the forum. I recently picked up a used 084 in great shape for what I thought to be a great deal. History I got was the old neighbor had a tree service business and passed away. All the saws were the older 0xx series saws. 023, 028, 031, 034, 038 and this 084. Most were well used with the exception of this big hog.

Fired up before purchasing. Low end would bog pretty good before coming to speed. Idle was rough and high speed seemed a little slow, but for the price, I took a chance on this old saw. Took it home. Cleaned it up. Replaced spark plug which was really fouled from running rich then fired it up. Ran MUCH better! Tried to adjust carb but still had issues with the low speed. Better than it was but I couldn’t get it to have that rapid trigger response I’ve tuned on my other saws.

Question is do you think a saw this old, even in the great condition it’s in would need a carb gasket kit? And would the clear plastic tank vent with grub screws possibly contribute to this problem? It disintegrated when touched and is no longer on the saw. I’ve read about replacing that with the orange “umbrella” vent. Is that a better solution?

Side note, I took it to local dealer and had them compression test it. Dude said I was holding 10 Bar of pressure (145psi) and that’s where he stopped (air pumped in) and it held with no leaks. Tons more questions to follow but here are photos for now.

Wrap handle 084 ...????

Worth every cent thrown into her !!

Replace the hoses and throw in a carb kit ......................

I'd go so far as to replace the crank seals too

Exactly!

What ever seals, carb kits amd hoses cost it'll still be cheaper than a piston.

Sweet saw!!!!!
I'd replace all rubber as cheap insurance.
Thanks! Been looking to get a used 880 but for $350, I couldn’t pass it up! The plan is to get a gasket kit for it but need to figure out which carb it’s got. I know it’s a Tillotson but don’t know which. I’d have to remove it to find out? Or can it be identified from just looking at it on the saw?

Any idea about going with that umbrella type vent or stick with the hose and grub screws? As for the crank seals, I’ll take it one step at a time. Small engines are new to me and I’d hate to mess something up on this saw given age and parts availability.

The hose is NLA from stihl but I’m sure any fuel line will work. I’ve been trying to track down a service manual and owners manual just to have. Got the parts list PDF which helps. Service manual is what I need. No luck finding that yet.

You got this saw for $350?

You SUCK!!!

Don't worry that a term of endearment around here.

I'd contact one of the well qualified saw hacks on these forums and have them go through it maybe give it a little porting love before I'd take it back to the dealer. Some of these guys know the work arounds on NLA parts for these saws.

Yeah, but NOT including the new 41” bar and chain. Got those after. It came with a 36” B&C. I like to tinker so I’ll do as much as I can then seek help when needed. I’m thinking about removing top end to clean things up inside. It looked pretty carbon fouled from running rich. It might be a chance to inspect things inside.

Also, Still trying to figure out the whole limited/unlimited coil and carb situation. I know I was able to lean things out to about 12,750-13,000 before running out of adjustment. Then I backed it back off to about 12K for now.

A saw that nice would be a collector item. A SHAME to put that into work.

The carburetor is a Tillotson, series HT. Which one exactly is written or stamped on the carb body. For the correct carb kit the number on the carb is importand.

I’d just replace the hose and push on an Echo style vent

And here I thought I’d condemn it to a life of milling o_O

I'd let someone hack on it and work it through some cookies.
This thing is a BEAST! It definitely needs to do some work.

I guess I’ll take it off to see which model. Thanks for the info!

That looks simple enough. Thanks! I’ll give that a try. Better than trying for find NLA parts.

You got a nice one. Open the muffler and mill with it. We would like see how it does with a fifty or a sixty on it in big logs.

This is a beautiful saw! It's OK Nate, I'm not the type to have things around and not use them either. I'd run the heck out of that saw!

I picked up some small fuel line from auto parts store and put the grub screws in it to replace the once clear tube that has disintegrated. Hope it works like it should. Still got the Echo type coming in as a backup.

Curious if you all have a preference between the old filter or the new HD2 filter. My understanding is if I want to put the new filter on that I’d need to remove the black rubber gasket first since HD2 has its own built in rubber. Correct?
