Hey,
I’m working on an old 056 at the moment. It had a piston failure, but I think the cylinder is salvageable. The IPL that I have doesn’t show 52mm for the 056, only 54mm & 56mm.

I found an old thread on the subject, and it appears the piston I need is 1115 020 2001.
My only question is... my piston had a “C” stamped into the top of it. What does it mean? Is there more than one 52mm piston? Is the part number I mentioned correct?

My 2c is,,, clean up the cylinder, to see if there are any bad marks, and then look for a piston.
As to the size, you may find that some one has used parts from another saw or just put a top cover from another saw , ie 051 is a 52mm

Edit, I see some of the eBay listings quote the number you say (1115 030 2001) number and say 045/056
@Definitive Dave should know
Cheers
Sean

Yeah, I plan on trying to clean up and reuse the cylinder. I’ll need a piston though...

I was just reading an old thread on this same topic. I believe some of the early 056’s were 52mm. The saw is serial #112568856.

I saw that OEM piston on eBay. I was just curious about the letters stamped on them. The one for sale is clearly labeled “B”. Whereas mine is a “C”.

I’m curious what the letters mean too. I could see “A” being right on spec, and B/C being under or over. Or something like that.

Well,
I ordered that OEM “B” piston off eBay. Hopefully it fits...

Did your cylinder clean up? That Ebay listed said it looked unused! I would ask for a cylinder pic! That would be a steal if it was unused!

I just picked up some muriatic acid. I’m gonna try to clean it up tonight. I think it will. It only has a little bit of transfer on one side of the exhaust port.

From memory....

A & B can go together
B & C can go together
But shouldn’t mix A & C

I think you're right on the money. The tolerance differences are tiny, but enough that mixing two sizes up or down is a problem.

I know for some of the Poulan saws, they made all the way out to an "E" sized piston and bore, and the E piston wouldn't even fit in an A or B cylinder.

The cylinder cleaned up very nice. I just got my piston installed, everything was looking good. Then I realized that I forgot to find a base gasket.

When I pulled the cylinder off, the old base gasket stayed pretty much intact, attached to the crankcase. Very little if any was stuck to the cylinder base. I feel pretty good about reusing it for now just to get this project moving.

I have a couple questions for you guys though. I have Motoseal and 518 on hand right now. Which one would you recommend for dressing the existing gasket? The other is, while looking for a base gasket for the 056, I kept stumbling across an aftermarket brand called “Pro-Line”. Is their stuff of usable quality?
