I was under the assumption that it would fit both?

046 is about 3/8 wider and also the carb mount studs are about a half inch or more longer on the 046

I agree. That’s an early 044 fuel tank. Still has the old style impulse line that was used on the 10mm saws, low profile fuel cap and no spot for the metal chain guard on the corner of the tank.

Yup, you are correct.
The 046, 460 and 461 air filter base is black and the air filter mount sort of resembles a V stack.
