Stihl 046/460 D Jug. Are there benefits using it on a 460, or better using it on a Hybrid?

The D cylinder certainly has a nicer looking combustion chamber for those of us who do not have the ability to cut the squish band.

I plan to build a saw with each, hopefully with base gasket delete, and see what runs better. I think I will have to sand the squish band in the H jug to get it to work with a base gasket delete. Would like to see how the differences in port timing play out in that scenario.

Seems like I should be able to delete the D jug gasket w/o any problem, much easier!

Interesting, seems like this refers to the change from the D cylinder to newer ones? But the D cylinder is more favored by people? 063F1006-35DE-4AE6-A84B-1C4D206308AD.png

Mason, the old 044s were rated at lower HP than the new 440s. You have run both ...

Probably just better port timing. Prior to EPA getting involved to curtail any "exhaust waste."

What interests me is that it says the old cylinder is still available as the low compression version. Never noticed much change in compression being the old one having less?

I had a Hemi chamber 046 that had 175 PSI stock, but it would not out cut my 044 till I sent it to Bret.

That may be the 046 Magnum … and how do you explain their comment "increased power"?

The first year 046 Mag came with a DP muff cover, from the factory. 044 never did.

066 did also, and they rated it 1/2 HP more with the DP cover.

I know the early 044s were rated at lower HP. Comical that the ones with the little 3/8" muff hole were rated lower than the ones with large 5/8" muffler hole. I guess it comes down to HP#s, Powerhead Weight, and Magnum stickers sell saws!

Any advantages of one over the others?
Lots of variables to consider. Cylinder port timing stock. Where you want it to be after porting etc.
Compared to a 046 piston the 064 piston has a lower crown height and iirc longer skirts and the pin bosses are wider as well.
The 272 has a higher crown height and a single ring.
I haven't played around with the wiseco piston yet so I can't comment on it.
Your piston choice just depends on the type of build your doing and what you want the end result to be.

Agreed, except that the 064 is .060 taller than a 46

272 is .100 taller

So Wiseco is better for cant cutting?
What's the matter with the 046 piston?
Does an 064 piston make for better work saw?
