Hello, I'm new here.

Thanks to the people who have taken the time to put all this info online, I have learned a lot.

I just got an 044, it has what appears to be a new piston and cylinder. I did not expect to receive a saw with new parts on it for what I paid for it.

The only markings on the cylinder are some small stampings on a machined area near the top, and "Stihl"
is cast into the side on the fins down low almost behind the recoil housing.

Do I have a real part here?

Probably an OE cylinder if it says Stihl on it. Who knows on the piston... could be AM. Hard to say without pulling the cylinder off.

I still haven't gotten around to pulling the plastic off to get pictures, this thing is running great after getting a few tanks through it, just cutting wood while the weather cooperates.

Ok, I took pictures. Am I reading the serial number right? Does that mean it has a 12mm wrist pin? Or at least that case half came from a saw that did? The Ebay seller was less than helpful and never got back to me about the saw when I asked questions, their account doesn't look like they sell or flip saws, mostly womens clothing lol.

Honest the cylinder looked really clean on the outside when I got it, I thought it looked new. Bear with me here please, this P&C has 130 psi cold. these pictures were taken by wife, the lines on the piston and cylinder look worse in the picture. I can't feel them...............is this combo toast?

I ordered a Meteor piston just now, when they say 50MM, are they referencing the bore size or the piston? I'm going to bring the jug to work tomorrow and measure it in several places and maybe hone it.

I wonder if transfer was cleaned from that cylinder once already then put in the USC.
Pics of top of piston?
50mm would be bore size.
Sand it, don’t hone it.

What is the USC? Sorry if I'm asking "searchable" questions, I really appreciate the help guys. I'm a welder/machinist not super slick with the inner-nets

The honing cross-hatch in the cylinder looks like it is newer than the lines above and below the ports, I also noticed that the clutch side of the case is worn through all the way to the rubber mounts for the tank/handle assembly. This thing looks like it got dragged behind a truck.

Either way I'm really having a blast working on this thing. I have what appears to be a basket case 260 on the way now also, chainsaws are worse than garden tractors........I'm thinking I can fit more in the shop too......

If this is a saw your keeping for yourself I’d reuse that piston. If you can’t catch one of those scratches with a finger nail it will fine. Just clean up the jug like what has been said. Maybe double check the port bevels on the intake port. That’s likely what has caused the scratches to the piston
