Hello all,

I just picked up a stihl 034 av today that was straight gassed for a pretty good price. I'm planning on replacing with meteor piston and caber rings or oem if possible. I am wondering if I have the smaller bore jug or the larger bore jug. Is there any way to tell without actually measuring? Also I have to tear down the saw and haven't determined if the jug is repairable yet but I would like to reuse the jug I have and just replace piston and rings. Any information would be appreciated I tried to look it up online but didn't find anything specifying the differences.

Brock.

I might be wrong, but I think most or all of the 46mm 034 cylinders were open port. An 034 super would be 48mm and would be closed port. It may also have a 46 or 48 on the right side of the base.
Post some pics here when you get it torn down and someone will identify it

Currently breaking it down right now shouldn't be to long before I have the jug off and can get some pictures. I hope it's the larger bore but I won't be upset either way.

If it’s a mahle cylinder it should have a 46 or 48 on the side of the base like @huskihl said. Parts are available, and if it’s not a 48mm jug one is available, the muffler is spaced differently from the 036, but I believe the 034 super cylinder works with the same muffler, and I think you can use an 036 muffler with a spacer.

Did some looking and it looks like the 034 was also available as a 46mm closed port. There are a couple on eBay, as well as super cylinders for about $80 used oem. Used 46mm closed port versions are available for a bit less

The 034's and supers I saw on ebay were ks. Has a 112 or 113 code on the side. Might be able to id his like that

I have an 034 closed port I have to put together one of these days. I hear they also made them in open port. Problem is, it just seems like there is always some other saw I would rather work on!

Have the jug removed it's a mahle says 46 on the side closed port. The piston is roached bad and there's a lot of transfer on the exhaust side of cylinder the intake side is in pretty good shape. It might sound dumb but is there any benefit to the smaller bore or should I just junk it and put a larger bore top end?

Muriatic acid will clean up the transfer. Or some 80 grit on a mandrel in a drill or dremel. Just be careful to not sand through the plating. The piston is smoked and should be replaced. Looks more like it was run lean, rather than straight gas. Usually straight gas will score all the way around, or at least some on the intake side. Pay attention to the tune when you rebuild it. If it 4 strokes and then the rpm's climb it has an air leak somewhere

Make sure you find and fix the cause of the failure before you run it again. If the cylinder can be cleaned, that is what I would do. I just use sand paper on the mandrel like Randy demonstrated in his video, the acid works, but you have to know how to use it (so I don't).

I don't think you can put a larger bore on the 034. 034 Super and 036/360 I think have a longer stroke (again, it can be done, but not within my abilities).

Yeah I think I'll use the works toilet bowl cleaner method and then emery cloth and then a red scotch brite. It's worked for me on other jugs so I'll just repeat my process and hope this one isn't beyond saving. Thanks for the heads up and all the information. Also the plug is a new plug I think the previous owner thought it would fix the problem.

Also still wondering if Its worth the money to put the larger top end on. Even if I have to mod the muffler or whatnot I'm not to worried about that.

Mike, I was under the impression if you replaced the whole top end it would be compatible. ? I'll most likely end up salvaging the jug and just putting a new piston but I only see meteor piston and caber rings for the larger bore.

You're thinking of the 024/super/026, Mike.
The 034, super, and 036 all have a 34mm stroke. 034s cylinder bolts right onto an 034

If you can save it that’s great, sometimes you can find a deal on a great topend with good piston that isn’t to much more than a $40 meteor and have an 034 super with the bigger bore, just a thought
It depends on if it’s a keeper or not

Thanks huskihl it's appreciated. I'm going to see how this jug turns out in the next couple of days and go from there. I normally get my parts from HLS whenever I need and didn't see it listed there. I'm going to shop around and see if anyone has a super jug for a fair price. Always looking for a gain in power.

Also I thought the 024 super and 026 shared the same bore and stroke and only the base 024 was smaller? There's so much information on the web that's misleading its hard to get a solid answer.
