How the heck do you pro's read the serial number to tell year, month, and day? lol I'd like to know.
Almost impossible on a stihl. On newer huskies, there's a 2 digit date code off to the side of the serial #. On older black tag huskies, the 1st # is the year, followed by the week.

The serial number of one I know was built prior to its purchase on Nov 2, 1990 is 22248322. Since this one is 8 and yours is 9 digits, I'd say yours is considerably later. I also have 026's with the serial numbers 228874912 and 241159621 one being metal tag and the latter being plastic tag. That new 026 cost $378.50 out the door with an 18" bar and a free case. I still use it. That was a lot of money for a 50cc saw 25 plus years ago but a very inexpensive saw per piece of wood cut. A quality purchase will often prove to be a better value in the long run. That comes out to less than $15 per year of ownership and it does what it needs to do whenever I need it.

When using the parts manual, and there is a serial number reference, drop the first digit. The first digit is ONLY a country of origin code, not part of the serial number. OP's serial number is 28284062. The first 2, is a code (made in USA). Code 1, is Germany, code 3 is Brazil. Beyond that, I have no clue...

If I recall right, the 026 was made in the early to mid 1990's and the 026 PRO came in a few years later when the decomp valve became popular. The PRO version also has a slightly bigger engine but the case is virtually identical. Most of the time a PRO will cost you about $50 more. I have a pair and one backs up the other. Both run like bandits and are my favorite firewood saws. I paid less for both of them added together than one new MS261.

The 026's are great saws. I've got two runners and two I'm rebuilding.
I cannot even begin to encourage you enough to do the restoration. Here are two pics of one of mine:

This one runs exactly like the other one: flawlessly.

Both of them also appreciate the second outside bumper spike. I grind the points to match the inside spike. It's worth it.
