If you go on the Stihl web site and go to "contact us" you can email the serial number to Stihl and they should be able to tell you some stuff about the saw. I don't think they can tell exact manufacturing date but if the saw was registered when it was sold from the dealer they may be able to at least tell you when the saw was sold and which dealer sold it.

I just emailed Stihl customer relations on one I just bought on Ebay. Received date of sale back from a real person in customer relations within
about two hours. I knew my 026 was early production because of red choke lever and metal riveted on tag. My serial began with 223 … … and they told me it was sold in October 1991. They said they do not have manufacturing dates before 1999. I may offer this saw for sale here as I couldn't believe the condition. It is basically brand new minus maybe 8 hours. I don't think I can bring myself to putting this into daily work as a 29 year old pre emissions Stihl in like new condition is in my mind a collector item. There are plenty of real good used saws available on Ebay. I am partial to the 028S and also the 026. Both have a lot of power for a light well balanced saw. I also run a MS 460 Magnum for cutting saw timber.

I’ve had several 026 and 260. My favorite was my very first saw a red lever 026. Still have 026 pro from 1999 and wish I still had the early red lever

My Red Lever 044 is the best one 044/440 I've ever had! It has a K+S P+C.

There are certain letters punched on almost all parts of your saws.
O is 1989
P is 1990
Q is 1991
...and so on. From A to Z

If you want to know the date of manufacturing, search the newest part (no spare part) or look for the letter on the crankcase.

Found mine inside the circle on the bottom of the crankcase next to the part number. 6530C654-7185-4161-8B62-0BDFCE97F3C7.jpeg

Is this system used only for older Stihl saws or is it still used on today's saws? I kinda like to know the age of the saws that I repair.

The system is still used:
Following letters are confirmed (my own tools):
T: built 2017
U: built 2018

Perhapps STIHL changed the series of letters in some year, since it does not match
with P=1990

I had never heard of this before, I'm going to have to check some of my saws. I know I purchased my 044 in Dec 1992.
