Hi folks

I have an 024 that I am rebuilding that has died due to the filter losing its flock
Its a tiny little filter.
Here it is compared to a ms260 filter half

IMG_0497.JPG

I am wondering if anyone knows if I need to get another one of these nasty little things of will an early 026 filter fit under the cover.
I believe the older 026 filter was not as wide due to the tower style tank vent.

I dont have a rear filter cover for the 024 either so I don't have a reference to check it to.

Advice welcome!

I could do with a nice filter cover if anyone has a spare too :)

I havn`t actually tried this but could a 026 top cover and airfilter cover be retrofitted to the 024 and then use a 026 airfilter. If that could be done then a MS 260 set could also be used with its bigger filter.

Yes, I did it. While I was at it, I installed the 026 top end. I had to do a little machining to the 026 plastic shroud near the back left to fit the 024 case, but I got it to work. Here's the hybrid:

Total cost for all the plastic, the top end, and the 026 air filter was only about $10 higher than a new 024 air filter alone. So, I went for it. Good venture in my book.

Nice job on the conversion. I have bought a goodly many 026 and MS260 saws but always turned down the offers of 024`s. I knew what I wanted and what I could expect to get out of the 026/260`s without the fiddling around to convert, not that there is much to do from the sounds of it. I really like my 044/046 hybrids we built back in the 2007 to 08 era.

It's been awhile since I built this hybrid, but I believe a new 026 carb was also required in order to mate with the 026 filter. Regardless, the saw ran so much better than the original worn out 024 that it was worth it.

Like JJ said.

If you want to keep the look of the 024 (Which I would), you'll need the correct filter. It's shorter in height than any 026 filter, even the old style.

For performance, you'll need a fine screen metal filter. Brown plastic and rare as hens teeth. Still Canada still sells a white plastic fine metal screen filter. Maybe one of the Canucks here can help you out. I modded one for my 024/026 hybrid with an 044 carb.

Yours is a flocked one with no flocking left. They do have some flocked ones on eBay that should be ok for a stock build. You could try to reflock yours as well.

I've got a couple o24's and older dolmars that could use new filter screen. Thinking of rebuilding them with new stainless mesh. Lots of sizes available down to .0007" opening size from supply houses. What would be a good choice for air filter? Thinking .005"- .010" and small wire gauge?
Also whats a good size for muffler screens keeping USFS happy?

Part number ...1121-120-1625 seems to be the Stihl genuine current part for the 024.

IMG_3114.JPG This is 150 micron stainless steel mesh from eBay. Newer style 026pro filter that I really reworked inside. Lots of grinding inside. Seems to work well and let's the saw breath IMG_3113.JPG
