From my research everyone wants as much power as they can have for a mill right. Funny thing is was at the local dealer and almost ended up in an argument with the guy selling saws. There was a gentleman in the shop looking to buy a 28-30" Alaskan mill and a saw to run it. The guy selling saws was going to sell him a ms391 with a 32" bar to run on the mill. I politely suggested a bigger saw and stated to the person looking for the mill why he wouldn't be happy trying to cut 26" slabs with that saw. He asked what he should get and I said as big as you can afford. So then he asked the salesman what other saws they had that were bigger. He told him a ms 441 but needs to order it because they don't stock it.
Then I asked what about the ms461 and the salesman said it isn't able to run a 32" bar only the 441 can says right in my book. He showed me and i said must be a typo because why would they say the 441 can run it but it's bigger sibling can't. Needless to say was told I was wrong and then asked if I'd ever milled with a chainsaw before. So showed him a couple pictures and left. Think the guy bought the ms461.

Sounds like the salesperson was sorely misinformed. That 391 would've melted in no time.
IMHO more power is better to an extent when it comes to CSM. Depending on what im cutting I prefer an 066 for most things. It's faster and lighter that an 088 or 090. That being said there are certainly times when you need something bigger than a 066.

I'm thinking of using my 064 on the small mill with a 25" bar but also don't know if I want to put it through that since nice 064's don't seem real easy to get anymore. But I'm sure on smaller stuff the rpm would be nice. But on wide hardwood the 090 is awesome with the 41" bar and .404 ripping chain. Unless it's on my 72" mill than you need to go pretty easy on it because even its underpowered on that mill

I was thinking of doing that with my 064 or the 041 super. Because running a regular grandberg vertical is a pain. But need to by the mini mill. Also have an 038 farm boss that according to what I've read is supposed to be 67cc but having a hard time believing it since my 041 super embarrassed it pretty bad in a 20" black ash. So thinking it might only be standard 038 that's 61cc. Even though what I read said all farm boss versions were same as a super.

You don't see the mini mill much but I think it's one of the best investments you can make if you run a CSM. I wouldn't hesitate to run the 064 on a mini mill. Parts are easy to find and It won't really affect the saw cosmetically as it sits upright and keeps the base off the ground when not in use.

Here's that 038. I think it would be ok on a mini mill at times. I do want a 045 or 056 sometime for some reason I like the old low rpm saws that just keep pulling the chain as you dig the spikes in

A friend has a 056 in the basement if your interested.
042 and 048 are about the same. Bigger bore. I have a 048 with a later coil on it. Runs good.

Parts seem pretty easy for the 038 since they still make a version of it over seas.

Yeah same series of saw with minor differences. Think they were the first saws to have gas and oil caps on the side. Would love an 056 but no extra money right now.

That's not a salesperson.....that guy is a certified moron, and a lazy bastard. The level of misinformation is truly mind boggling at times. I work for two different power equipment retailers. The independent shop is pretty much problem free. The Farm and Ranch store, not so much.

I like the 076 for CSM'ing now that the 090 is retired, big torquey old thumper that doesn't bog so easily milling wide hardwood slabs 32" and up.

That being said I do enjoy running the 084, but parts availability worries me a little
