I ground everything to around 25° on the square. I just ground them and it took what it took to get it. I started with mostly square chain though. Throw one on there and see how far off it will be from the angle the chain is already.

Well I've been searching for the conversion angles, and can't seem to?
What's the best angles to regrind my current chains so I won't have to grind as much off on the square grinder?
I have WoodlandPRO 30RCS-84 that I am going to slowly convert all over to square ground.
These chains previously were sharpened on my Oregon 511a, angles of 60/30/10
I think it was jimmyinNC or Nixon that said they round ground a certain angle before they convert? Any advice?

Quote from @Jimmy in NC ....

For those reading to learn...

Tip that was told to me early on in my square journey:

Find junk chains and square them to 10°, 80°, 0° on a round grinder to "square the chain" and get all cutters equal, then start the square conversion. That's what I did to take the 40° top plate and 45° farmer grind hook off this chain.

IS it possible to grind .325 or 3/8 low pro on these? I tried moving the rest that the chain rides on and I cannot seem to get a good angle on the chain that will not cut deeply into the links. Would some change in dresser angles thin out the grinding wheel enough to make it through?

I remember there being several threads on AnotherSite stating that this is possible and done, I am hoping so, for I plan on trying it out on .325 also. I'm pretty sure Jon @Mastermind square grinds.

Yes, you can get good results on .325 - 3/8 low pro. I know for my silvey R2 all I have to do is lead the wheel 1". For example if the wheel is 8 inches in diameter I would set the carriage for 7". I found it I do not need to alter the angles I dress the wheel at whatsoever.if you need to I can post some pictures of the set up

Will this work with a swing arm since the chain presentation is different? Pictures may explain.

The arm is fixed it only swing s. The chain rest can go up down and roll about the bolt.

There's a way to do it if you have adjustable arm for wheel wear.

I apologize. I could post pictures, of my silvey, but I think in the end it would be at best an "apples/oranges" comparison that wouldn't be of much help to you anyways. I did have an early model Simington swingarm, but I sold it several years ago in favor of the R2. I think there are a few guys on here that have a lot of experience on Simimgton that can better assist you. Hope you can get it to work for you.

What needs to be adjustable? The length of the arm? If that were the case I could possibly mill the arm to allow the chain rest to slide not sure that would help though.

The simington have a piece that slides like that. The other thing people did was to shim the motor up on some.

Can a person just dress the wheel thinner on the out side edge and then adjust this bolt to keep from going into the straps?

I tried to take several pictures of the 3/8 low pro but my phone is old and does not do macro. When I grind the square lining up the point of the cutter with the transition of the angles on the wheel it does not cut a diagonal on the cut but transitions higher in the top of the cutter. I cannot angle over more as it grinds the raker with the underside of the grinding wheel.

The slot with the square nut is where you adjust for wheel wear by sliding it in closer after it wears. That's the bad thing about the silvey with no adjustment for that.
