Nice work deets! What do you estimate you have into your splitter? I want to build one similiar to yours. I like the components you used. What's the cycle time? Any drawbacks to your splitter?
Well I have a lot of time into it, most of the steel was out of the scrap pile at my shop. But just the Ram, pump, dump valve, auto valve, 2 spool valve, hoses-fittings, engine, at least $5,000.

Haven’t used it yet but it looks like my days of wrestling logs over to the splitter (actually a “holder” for me) may soon be over:)

I don't know if I've shown this or not before .At any rate it ain't pretty but it is powerful .Took me 20 years to amass the junk to built it and 4 days when I got with it until it was done .
11HP Briggs electric start ,16 gallon per minute pump ,5" Parker Hannifan "super duty " cylinder .Tank /axle is 8" pipe .Beam is 70 plus pounds per foot piling beam .Tires and spindles Ford Escort .2" steel base plate /foot .Boat winch to lay it over horizontal and a cable system using the cylinder to stand it up .Pop licker is heavy must weigh a half a ton .It will split anything you can put in it .I only run it at about half throttle because there's only one of me, I never have any help .I suppose with the engine, pump, pump adaptor mount and control valve I have about $500 in it .I might have bought 10 pounds of 7024 welding rods .Some heavy welding and didn't want to fart around for week with 1/8"7018 to do it .At any rate the splitter is bullet proof even if it is ugly

Nothing extravagant here, but hope it does what I need. Found this little used 27 ton Gravely at an estate that is being sold off. Looks like new and runs decent. I'll get some action pics in the next week or so. May be a bit longer as we are headed into a stretch of single digit temps over the upcoming weekend and early next week.

First picture is our Huskee 35 ton purchased new in 2009/10 area. Still runs like a top and will start 1 pull most days. Spends it's life at best friend's (Lefty) place. @Wood Doctor uses it most of the time now.
Second is our Country Line 25 ton gifted to me in 2016. Spent life in backyard for personal firewood, so not much use on it. Moved it out to Lefty's when Edwin moved his operation to Lefty's as well.
Last picture is New Year's Day 2022. Lefty's barn burned down and took the splitter with it, death by fire, and that stinks big time. Not sure what will happen at this time, but leaning twards purchasing another, use it a year or two, and upgrade to something with adjustable 4-way and more features. Need to find money for that first.

Give it some time. Knee-jerk decisions usually fail. This loss was indeed a tragedy. I will never forget CountyLine --fast, strong. and reliable. We still have big Huskee and it runs fine, so all is not lost.

Unfortunate on the County Line splitter…know a few folks around here that have ‘em and they are solid, dependable splitters.

A friend of mine who was certified nuclear built this splitter back in 1989. 5 x 24" cylinder. 2" rod, 28 gpm 2 speed barnes pump, 18 hp B&S IC motor, 40 gallon hyd tank. 2 way dent control handle, Auto return at end of stroke via fiberglass rod and throw line and pulleys(works great!). 10 gallon fuel tank. The extended tongue makes splitting behind the truck easy. We have a small Boxer skid steer that we use to lift the big stuff. Roll lots of big stuff up an aluminum ramp. The Boxer is good for retrieving rounds and lifting onto the splitter. We run the Briggs about 2,400 rpm and vary the rpm based on the number of 'volunteers'.

Enough of bragging on my 33 year old splitter. Here's a few photos taken this afternoon:

By and large they exaggerate the tonnage on most of them .It's a selling point I guess . However as an example a 5" cylinder at 3000 PSI is around 48,000 or 24 ton .It would take over 4,000 psi for 30 ton and the pumps don't go that high .Realistically most 3,000 psi pumps are factory set at 2,750 making it about 22 tons .That said 22 ton is plenty .

Ran the new splitter for a little over an hour today. Had to drag wood to it so that slowed me down but that thing is fast with a capital F. Most of the time ran at half throttle. Still need to get my hour meter on it but I say it's a winner. Only complaint is they moved the axle/tank closer to the end so it's in the way more than our older splitters and makes it heavier when moving around.

There's a lot to be said about those heavy duty industrial tie rod cylinders .It would take forever to wear one out on a log splitter but if so they are rebuildable .The welded cylinders like a majority of commercial splitters use of course could be rebuilt except you literally have to cut them apart and weld them back together .Again though unless used 7 and 24 it would take a long time before that happened .Size means a lot though and internal seal leakage .Too small and leaking after about 20 minutes you could fry an egg on them .Heat is what causes most hydraulic systems to die on the vine .

I think the County line splitter cylinders are serviceable from what it looked like when I looked at one, but I imagine parts are special order only from china. They seem to last a long time anyway.

Purring like a kitten and I think it will do well. Put an hour meter on it as well.
