I wondered how they would hold up to the weight. Especially the wide drawers that are nice to load with hundreds of sockets. Thanks for sharing, sounding like I’m making a good choice for my budget.
My middle box is 42" and then I hung to side boxes on it.
At the time that was the biggest lower they had.

I’m going to buying a new box in the near future. I bought a 56” second hand no name chest last spring because I needed more space and it’s already broken. Talk about irritating. I’m going to try a harbor freight “US General” box. They seem very well built for the money. I’d like a nice snap on or matco box but even at the deeply discounted used prices they are well out of my budget.

Craigs List and FB Marketplace is your friend. Lots of techs get out of the business and discover they have nowhere to put that big box and/or need cash asap. Tool dealer prices on used boxes are not indicative of their real world cash value. Also, the new post-Sears Craftsman boxes at Lowe's are USA made and darn nice for the money.

Looks like a good set up Brian. You’ve given me a space saving idea. I plan on buying the 72” box, could just use it for my bench like it appears you’re doing. Might need to add a small extension on one side but that wouldn’t be difficult.

I had some old kitchen cabinets that are next to it. I built them up to match the height of my box. Then i made the top to match the whole thing, it's worked out purrty good for me.
If I was to do it again, I would of taken the wheels off the box and lowered it down a bit. But I'm damn near a midget.
It all depends on how tall you are and if you plan on standing or sitting by it.

You pretty much read my mind. I’m 6’2, but after adding a 2” butcher block the bench will be very tall with the wheels. Probably leave them off and put the box on 2x4’s to keep it off the concrete. Should make it about perfect height for a standing or bar stool sitting bench. I haven’t rolled my tool box anywhere in 20 years, not gonna start doing that with one that’s 6 feet long.

The craftsman is about 30 yr old. The us general is fairly new. 56" seems well built. Weighs about 600lb empty. Seems about as well made as my friends $6K Snap On. 20181118_171026.jpg

I had a us general 2. It was built nice and the drawers open and close with ease.
I sold it account of needing the room at the time.
Now I regret ever selling it.

I just have this old snap on toolbox. I bought it at a garage sale for $100.

Awesome! Period-correct speed stickers are a big bonus. I have a little Mac bottom box about the same vintage.

Just as important, what kinda Lawn Boy you got there?

I have three lawn boys actually.
The one under my table.

I alternate between the three, but now I have a John Deere model 70 lawn mower to fix up. So after that, I may just keep the J.C. Penney mower and sell the other two to someone who will use them.
