Loggers here love 'em, the one I have was actually found out in the woods and given to me, the handle was rotten, so after putting a new axe handle on it and pinning it, was good to go. The nice part about the pickaroon like I have it when you sink it into a piece of wood, it will grab. Actually takes a bit to get it to come off. Even a good size piece of firewood can be lifted. I would think any of the supply stores listed would ship yo a pickeroon. As for length, that depends on how tall you are. I like about a 32 inch myself.

OREGON makes a version of a pick/hookaroon I believe as well.
I noticed in there ad they have 4 different lengths. I be a inch over the 6 feet length [emoji39]

Same fella is where I got most of the heads I now use. He did not believe a wood handle could be put on to stay. So the double bit Kelly Works, splitting maul, even a machinists hammer I made into a wedge pounder with a broken axe handle. The one pickaroon was found in the woods and I handled it and pinned that handle. The reason I put some red paint on is so it can be found in the woods and not lost.

After loosing an axe in the woods, that paint is a nice idea.

I fixed my issue by buying one of those aluminum axe pouches, & if I'm in the woods, it's either in my hands or in the pouch.

I sure would like to find an old good single bit in the 4.5- 5lb range: I like my Council Tools Jersey, even the handle, but I wish it was a tick heavier.

I have people trying to find axeheads or any vintage toolhead for me i'm no expert but.
Some of the guy's were asking the difference in axes double and single bit.
Which they are endless.
I've never bought a vintage axe people always give them to me lol
But i will try to find and buy vintage ones for you guy's.
Here two modern cheap hardware store 20170611_114953.jpg 20170602_165020.jpg 20170611_114858.jpg axes against two vintage Kelly's.
The Kelly's are excellent felling axes.
Most all the modern cheap axes .
I've Seen are what i call splitting axes.
Heavy wide and the belly profile won't let them bite deep enough.
I do try to use my axes more and more for excercise lol
I know there is some excellent premium axes mine are the price of the handles which used to be 4.00 lol

I prefer the single bit Kelly's
This one has enough relief edge to be a good feller and splitter.
The Kelly fire axe suprised me it's a good splitter and chopper20170611_121737.jpg 20170611_121548.jpg 20170611_121622.jpg never had one of that design before.
Forgot about the collins commander
I think it was 2.50 at a yard sale
I'm going to clean it up and sharpen it.
I like the blade profile but the metal is soft compared to kelly/true temper.
My friend is a blacksmith i'm going to try to commision a kelly jersy style two inch longer with a thinner cutting edge and one inch taller.
He makes knives now i'm hoping he can make it.

Out of all the ones I have. I use smaller single bits and hatchets the most out of anything.
I have a small hewing broad hatchet that I've used more than I ever thought.

I've been looking for bigger hewing, adze and shingle axes.
I like all of the old hand tools. Draw kinfes, spokeshaves......

That'll be a fun trip in anticipation of what axes and old tools are there
I don't mind what double axe heads who would like to spare as I said before they are pretty thin on the ground over the pond I would like a keen kutter double bit one day but am more than happy with the odd Kelly or the over counter mass produced ones
When there cleaned up and handled they do look different

That'll be criminal you gotta get there before they get smelted down

Are there different brands of picyunes?
Any better brands than others?

There's Hookaroons, they are better for pulling, I have one for pulling slabs off the sawmill. Not great for firewood. Stihl made an all metal version, not sure if they stihl have it or not.

The logrite pickaroons are EXCELLENT. No, they don't have lovely hickory handles, but the tool is just really well designed. It's light, strong, comfortable to use, has a perfect tip design, and easy to spot against the forest floor any time of year. I have a vintage one with a nice handle that was probably homemade, but for daily use the logrite is far superior.

The one stihl sells is a logrite that's painted orange. Everyone that uses mine says they're gonna buy one. Honestly, I can't imagine bending over and trying to grab hold of a piece of wood with my hands anymore. A quick swing with the pickaroon and it's hooked. Get into a safe lifting position and give it a tug. Swing it up onto the splitter and grab the next one. It's a dandy of a tool.

Hey Dave I would love to have a Jersey pattern, and I'm not picky about brand at all.
