Retro in that these are reproductions of the originals. Slab side receivers, no forward assist on some and tiny charging handles (green stocked model). The polymer (plastic) fore end and stocks feel super cheap, too. I can understand why guys called them Mattel rifles now......especially after these replaced their M14's!

Those would be ex-Air Force rifles, most likely. Most of them were converted to A2s and returned to service by Air Force Combat Arms specialists like myself. I converted a few thousand. The Air Force was the only branch (and first) with the M16. The Army and later Marines and Navy got the A1s because they wanted the forward assist. I know the FBI ended up with quite a few of the surplused AF M16s as well.That's what our agency rifles are. Original M16s with no forward assist or brass deflectors.
