Ok I have just started grinding my own chains and have heard of vise that is self centering.
I think it is a pita to measure when I switch sides.
Anybody got the parts to convert the vise on my grinder?

I assure you I am NO expert.... as people say gently kissing the cutter is key....

I can make the the stihl 3/8 RS chisel chain cut GREAT on the grinder.... i believe I used the 30/60/0 angle...I haven't ground any Oregon chain yet....I also am getting the stihl semi-chisel to cut good also...

I think it helped me a great deal when I took a brand new stihl RM(semi-chisel) out of the package and put it in grinder, and tried to match the angles.....it REALLY helps to find the right angle on your grinder.... lets face it the angles on every brand of chain/grinder are different, just have to find out what works on "your"set-up....

It is fun once you start getting good results.... the grinder is NOT just a plug in and grinder abgood chain, takes ALOT of trial and error!!!

Post some photos - lots of different variations, and different vises.

I know I am dredging up an old post but I am wondering if @Tpagel got an better with this grinder.

I picked up an Efco 136, Belsaw 550 and a set of the Efco breaker & spinner in a CL buy. The Efco was missing parts but I am finally getting it back together with some bits and pieces from the hardware store. I may need to buy the actual parts but for $80 total, I can't complain.

Please let me know what you discovered to be the trick with an older grinder!

I can use this grinder OK.

I like to file unless a chain has made contact with the ground or is far gone.
I still don't like my vise on the 136 I have. It takes a good bit of measuring when you switch side.
Good luck with yours Barry.
