I’m not an expert, but I’ve noticed one clear indication

See the threaded holes on the front face, down near the bottom ?

I’ve never seen a 394 with them. They’re for mounting the wrap protection plate

394 without the threaded bosses

395 with plate

You also have 395 case halves ?

No it’s a 394 I got a 395 crank when I found out I had a spun rod bearing

Sounds like you have a 395 piston, they have a shorter skirt and would cause the intake timing to fall close to there.

How do the Meteor pistons fall out? More 395 than 394?

This is correct. My 394 built in 1993 does not have the plate mounting boss and threaded holes. The 394 made in 1998 that belongs to my employer does.

Safe to say if there aint no holes, then for sure it’s a 394............ ?

Yeah my 1999 394 flywheel side case half had holes for plate and my stock 1996 394 has no holes.

So it sounds like we are zeroing in on the year that change took place... '97 or '98.

Anybody out there have a 394 built in '97??

I think if the first digit is 6....it's 1996. But someone correct me if I'm wrong.

FWIW, ifin' you get a wrap handle kit and want to install the plate, it can be done on the older 394. Just drill and tap. The holes should not go into the oil tank, but will be close. Here is my pre-hole 394 with the plate installed.

They fall in line with the stock pistons for skirt lengths.
