So this thing popped up on CL and a quick drive it was coming home with me. Saw does runs but not so sure on how well. Idle and throttle was fine but clearly it has an aftermarket cylinder on it and is no longer the desired OEM top end.

But I did see it has a red light as well. How will I know if that is original and still working? Piss rev it until it lights or can I tell by the style coil on it?

I'm guessing it has a cheap aftermarket top end as I did take the top cover off and couldn't see any markings and it looks really clean as in new. So I might be after an OEM jug for it. I wished they hadn't hacked up the top cover ):

I will check that out in a bit. Thankfully I didn't pay a lot for it and it also came with a little brother an 034 which short of missing an air-filter cover appears to be original and runs.

Here is a pick of coil

There appears to be play in the crank rod and or piston bearing. Flywheel rocks slightly back and forth small amount without piston moving.

Looks like poor port shape to me.

Those are both dandy saws. The only time the fw ought to move without the piston is a couple degrees from bdc or tdc. Probably smoked the AM wrist pin bearing that came with the kit

I can only hope. I will have to remove the top end and see what happened. Guy said he was selling it for his sister as the original owner passed away. Was in his 70s. While that may be true he also said the guy was cheap and doubt the guy would have paid up to put a OEM cylinder on it. Any ways I got this and the 034 for 3 bills so I felt safe with that knowing I can still part them out. 066 came with a well used 28" Stihl bar and near new chisel chain and the 034 has a near new bar 18" .325 chain maybe 50% left so based off bars and parts I figured it was a no brainier. Both run and should cut as they are but won't until I'm sure everything is good to go.

066 has the dual port muffler and still has the OEM baffle in it. The saw otherwise looks all original. It also has a new Stihl rim clutch on it and rim.

Based off the other link it does have the wiring terminals for it being such. I just have to sort where the play is coming from on the rod. I'm pretty sure it needs crank bearings as well. It will be good for me to go through one of these saws anyways. I may still just run the top end on it though until it needs replaced or I find a OEM one. I'm sure plenty around here would be willing to give up a nice flat top cylinder for a small re-homing fee?

The red light will start to blink at at around 11900 rpm and stop again when you get over about 12500 rpm from memory. I know I listed this in the post I linked above.
The coil is also limited to 13500 rpm.

That cylinder would look better in the garbage :)

If you decide to part it out, I will take all the rear plastic orange bits on the tank handle and the recoil starter cover.

That cylinder looks like the one I got from Northwoods saw that was supposed to be a branded Hyway cylinder and came in a generic box. Needless to say it went in the trash after he refused to give me a refund. Pissed me off, he did. Yeah, thats where it would go if it were mine. You would be much happier if you took jmssaws up on his offer. Funny, I never bought another thing from Northwoods.....

sorry let me clear this up.......I'm going to rebuild the saw to stock configuration with the help of a part or parts from jmssaws. For my purposes this one doesn't need be ported. I have a 361,460,660 and 880 that have had that treatment already.
