Buddy wants to get a powerful bruschcutter for use here in NC as well as in FL (he has properties in both states) he has 4+ acres to clear in FL and general use here in NC.

I was kind of torn between the Stihl FS360 and FS560. Comparing to the Husqy 336, the Stihls are heavier but seem to have better power.

Recommendations?

Only ran the heaviest husqvarna 345 but I would supplement it with my fs90.
I cut over 3” buckthorn and honeysuckle, vines all that garbage with both of them.

You won’t be surprised to learn that the biggest gains came by keeping the blade sharp.

They’re both not that great at getting bigger (3”+) stumps flat to the ground but with 1 to 1.5” whips they’re equal.

Im not one to vote for the underpowerd options but that weight is a killer after a few days in the harness.

If it was me, I’d look for a middle option then have a buddy cutting with a saw at 3” or more.

To be honest I advised him to get a good sized Pro line trimmer and just put a blade on it. I’m not one for having a different dedicated tool for everything.

I use a blade on my little FS70 and it does fine up to 3” if you know how to use it.

Have them look at Echo with the PAS system. I'm pretty sure the brush cutter attachment has a deeper great reduction over the string trimmer head.

I have only used the Stihl but I own the FS560 and it’s one hell of a machine. Tons of power and runs flawlessly. Keep that blade sharp and it’ll cut some decent sized saplings if you know what you’re doing. I’ve used it lots for tree spacing work in regen forests and when you’re paid by the hectare you want something that’s powerful and going to last.

I have an Echo SRM 2620U and a SRM 410U. The 2620 is light and will cut just about anything. The 410 is a monster as far as power goes but has the weight associated with a unit of that size. I have a nice padded harness from Echo that is super comfortable but can get hot in the summer.

Echo 410 is a beast. We have one at work and on another WMA. Never had any trouble BUT they do take a larger arbor blade. Some dealers don’t stock these. I have a blade for a Stihl fs90 and it works great as well, but doesn’t have near the power the 410 does.

I have both also and just a web style harness. Both are great products.

Thank you all for the answers. Going to chew through all this with him and come up with a game plan.

I have a Husqvarna 545FR

This thing is a beast. I use the Scarlett blade to clear. Makes life easy. 4” dis. wood is no problem.

The included harness is priceless. The tool would be useless without it.

I cut, let go and I’m hands free to grab and move trees as needed. Reach back grab the handles and back in business. I use the brush cutter for hours with the included harness.

545 engine is all power. This tool also has a huge gas tank which is nice. Less refills, less time lost, more $$$ made.

Another thing to think about. The 545FR comes with the harness and three attachments standard. Scarlett, weed eater, grass blade.
Ready to rock out of the box.

Edit: to correct 525 to 545(45cc)

Is the 525 husky 52cc's or 25cc? I like the new husky trimmers/b-cutters but I thought that model was small displacement?

STIHL 560CEM

I use it from May. Unbelievable machine must be the best of the best. Torque and Power with all equipment even the disks to remove trees.

I tested a Husky 545 from a friend. Not even there. No idea about the 555 though...

Ya 45cc has enough power to do pretty much anything. I suppose it comes down to how good a the components are like shaft size, clutch, gearbox, etc. Not sure I'd want an MT B/C or clearing saw.

> 4+ acres to clear in FL

I would get one of these:

DR Field and Brush Mower PRO-26, 10.5 HP Manual-Start

https://www.drpower.com/power-equip...ehind/at4-10-5hp-b-s-ms-pro-26in-new-50st.axd

I have owned various products of theirs, not the best, not the cheapest, but, a good value. You could probably get the clone at Northern Tools for less.

4+ acres is a lot to clear, especially on regular basis with a heavy hand held.

Instead of a DR why not a Gravely L8 , C8 , or 5665 , etc. With a 30" mower they are tanks and they chew up brush instead of just cutting it off.

On the brush cutter, I have a FS240 and an FS240R. While not a true brush cutter, for a one time 4 acre gig I wouldn't think twice.
