Working on my recently acquired tractor. I hate leaks, even small ones so I’m rebuilding 2 of my loader cylinders. These cylinders do not have a threaded gland and are retained by 1 inner and 1 outer snap ring.

First I removed the external snap ring, it is a screaming *b-word to remove...more on that later.

Next remove the rod from the barrel. It only took gentle persuasion to come out. Be prepared to catch some fluid.

I went to the bench too fast, I remounted the rod on a pin so I could get the rod end nut off. These are really tight so don’t be afraid to break out your favorite leveraging tool.

Next is replacing all the old seals. Once the nut was off I removed everything and placed them in the order they came off for easier installation

Installed the new gland seal. This zip tie trick worked good to get it in there, then cut it and worked the seal into the groove.

Once that was done I installed the new wiper seal.

Lastly I replaced 2 seals, 1 backer and the wear bushing on the piston.

So up to this point this rebuild has only taken an hour and a half. And that’s with me taking my time, and cleaning everything up around the mount pins and the cylinder itself. Job complete? Hell no! For the life of me I cannot get that damn outer snap ring back into its groove. I fought with it for 2.5 hours, trying everything I could think of to spread it enough to just get one end of it in the groove. My brother is checking to see if they have anything at his work that will help. If he doesn’t have anything I’m going to have to make a tool out of flat stock. This is the toughest, most stubborn snap ring I have ever had the displeasure of tangling with. Pretty sure I could use it for a helper spring on my 3/4 ton truck. Here’s where it sits, once I get this damn ring back on I’ll be repeating the process on one of the boom cylinders.

Any one have any tips on this fuggin prick?

Lmao. Built a JD 24A skid loader from crates when I was 17. Hose clamp.

It’s an external snap ring so a hose clamp will just make me cuss more...lol

I don’t have any good advice but I did cuss at it a bit, always seems to help me.
Wasn’t it your brother that makes tools out of flat stock?

Funny you say that. I plan on making a scissor out of flat stock when I get home from work today.

This would be my tool of choice if I’m looking at it right. https://www.sears.com/craftsman-external-lock-ring-pliers/p-00949273000P

That’s what I need! It’s tough to find snap ring pliers that aren’t built for the ones with holes. Didn’t even think off sears whilst frantically searching the internet for what you found. There’s a true value that has a good stock of craftsman tools that I go by daily, hope they have them. Don’t wanna wait for stuff in the mail but I will if I have to. Thanks again for the link!!!!

I lost sleep over this last night, I don’t often get my butt kicked by something so mechanically simple. Somewhere, there’s a snap ring manufacturer that’s laughing because they won the “who can make the most stubborn snap ring competition.”

We run into those often where I work. We have a pair of snap ring pliers that ratchet open and has different tips. We just had to use them to change out some disc harrow bearings. The snap ring was an internal 6" Mother freaker. I will see what brand they are when I get to the shop in a few.

@XP_Slinger go to harbor freight and see if they have a pair. If not, just buy a pair and cut the ends off and weld on the flat stock to the tips. That way you don't have to make the whole tool, just the ends. That is, if your local Sears don't have the right ones (I doubt they do!).

Ours are the OTC 4513 set. See if they may help you.

Thanks!

My brother in law is a tractor guy and he said he has 3 different sizes I can borrow. Wish I would’ve thought to call him last night.

Oh:oops:
They don't make the ones I used to have they were slightly offset and looked like a flattened end on the duckbill nose.

They still do.
