Let me start by saying me and Mike have become great friends over the past 6 months, we talk almost daily atleast, he has built 5 saws for me in that time 254XPG, 2153, 2x 262xp, and a 440 Hybrid, they all perform top notch, I did a cosmetic resto of the 254XPG and I will do the same to my 262xp, but they ran as good if not better then I had hoped for them to, my dad has the 2153 and a 262xp that Mike did for me, I traded my dad out of his prized stihl saws for them, it wasn't hard after he ran them. His favorite saw is the 2153, loves how light it is and how strong it is. I have 2 more saws planned for him later in the year, he has other people's saws to build right now, so I figured I would let others go first, as soon as he is caught up i have a 288XP and 064 for him to port, I can ask Mike anything and he always gives it to you straight, mike is as good a guy as you can hope to find on the site, I never worry about a saw that I send him, I have saws from many good builders on here and hope to get more from others in the future, Mike is as good as they come. I try and send certain models to builders that are known for them to have them done. Very pleased to call Mike my friend.

Update: I am up to 14 saws ported by Mike and counting! All run amazing

Rattler (Mike) has been helping me with a problem saw over the past week or so, and while I don't have the saw back yet I can review his customer service:

Fantastic. Not only do I feel comfortable sending the tools I make my living with to him, but I've made an excellent friend. More on the saw when I receive it.

20170716_144336.jpg I bought a 288 from @rattler that he had in the trading post. Freshly rebuilt and ported. Communication was great so I bought it. Saw is a mean sob. I didn't know buying this saw would end up with a great friendship with a wonderful fella. Mike is about as down to earth and happy to share anything as anyone I've met. I wouldn't hesitate to send him anything. Anyone considering getting a saw ported by him should.

I have so many saws built by Mike I will have to conduct a search and survey mission to get a good count, but until then, I can only reinforce what everyone else has already said. Great work, great guy, trustworthy and industrious. Thank-you Dustin, for starting this thread.

Mike and I became friends years ago on AS, trading small parts, stories and observations. He set me straight on many technical questions. After he built one saw for me, I should have bought stock in Fedex. Since then many more shuttled off to North Carolina.

I promised, but haven't yet delivered, a shootout of my small saws built by Mike -- a Husqv CP55, a 154, and a 346xp, to compare with some 254s, 350s and 346s that I had tweeked myself. Thinking I would use the same bar and chain for all...

Off the top of my head Mike also massaged a 262, some 288s, a 359 and probably my "wowiest" Mike saw: a 372xpg. I grew up with a 266 and have a few very good 272s, but that xpg is something else.

Since Mike got a lathe he has machined quite a few cylinders for me, hitchhiking in the package when I sent him other saws. Some of them have yet to be assembled, but the ones I have installed, I got just what I specified.

My only gripe ever was a 254, I think, no decomp, that was so snug I broke the (20-year old) recoil. Having recovered from shoulder surgery, both sides, I should go back now that I am better and get a compression reading. But once I get it lit, like all the others, it's a winner.

Last month at about dusk an ash fell across my lane. It gave me a perfect chance to take my Rattlered Husqv 246 for a walk. It made short work of the "chore" (O darn I have to go run a hopped up saw) and I was home before dark.

I know I am forgetting some stuff, but its all good. I haven't met Mike in person, but I hope to some day. Our shared interest in saws has brought me a true friend. And I can recommend his work with no reservation.

I don't quite have my saw yet, but dammit it's hard to argue with quality.

A couple months ago Mike found a saw for me thru another fella on the site @dustinwilt68 from paying attention to my posts about how much I like Jonsereds.

A Jonsereds 2071 in pretty good shape was then bought and shipped from Dusty and sent to Mike, where it received a NOS clutch cover, and a good used clutch. I decided to make the build a little more special and ordered a Dominant piston and Ceramic hybrid bearings.

Mike was excited to use these parts and treated the cylinder to a very nice port job, along with a cut squish band and base.

Not only is Mikes workmanship top quality, his attention to me as a customer was perfect and I have made an excellent friend.

Now some saw porn:

Mike is as top notch as they come, I first contacted him about porting a 254 for my Dad, and we became fast friends. Before I even got my Dads saw rebuilt (which needed a new fuel tank, Mike sent me one) he and I decided to gift @T.Roller a ported 261. I split the case to give the saw a good going over and Mike absolutely made it run. I ran it at Randys GTG and it was super sweet. He is currently porting my Dads saw and I have already arranged to have him port my 372 XP later this year. The quality of work is top notch and communication is excellent throughout the entire process. Mike is a great friend and I would recommend his work to anybody.

I contacted Rattler Work Saws back in 2017 about a rebuild and port job on a 371xp. Mike was quick to reply, listened to what I wanted from the saw, and communicated clearly and professionally about cost and timeframe. To say he delivered is an understatement. My saw was completed and shipped quickly and is dead reliable and a freakishly strong joy to use. It generally runs a 24” on an 8 pin but has run a 28”on the same 8 pin with no discernible difference. In fact, I liked it so much that I chose Rattler to port two more (so far) saws for me..a 346xp with the 199 carb swap, and a 390xp that I expect to arrive soon. I’d also like to add to the superlatives already shared in earlier posts about Mike...he’s a man of conscience and integrity who is both honest and professional. The highest praise I can pay him is to say that I’d be glad to call him my friend without his saw work, and happy to be his customer without his friendship...I count myself fortunate to know him as both. If you are considering having Rattler perform work on your saw please do without reservation..and feel free to message me as a reference.

Mike @rattler is awesome. He's currently porting a 395 for me. The saw was originally built by @jacob j. I'll post more updates when the saw is finished and I get it.

At this part of the build, Mike keeps me updated with step-by-step pics and discussion about the saw. He's a straightforward, good natured and honest fella.

Great guy to work with. I would very happily send Mike a slough of saws to port in the future.

@rattler built the first ported saw I bought, a 371xp that got me hooked...

He is the one who taught me how to port and always been a mentor.

Never have a doubt when dealing with Mike... and I don’t say that often about anyone.

Thanks Mike for all your help.

Not sure what else I could add because all the comments above have been spot-on. I bought a 288xp and had it sent directly to Mike. He sent me pics and kept me updated while he was working on the saw. I even arranged to pick up the saw and meet the man himself (plus I dropped off my ms361).

Great guy to deal with and as nice as can be. I love the power the saw makes. My buddy just bought a 661 and I let him run mine....afterwards, he wanted to know more about this Mike guy lol.20190408_173800.jpg

I had a cylinder I needed help with on the squish and base cuts. After seeing Mike's work I sent him a message, he didn't have a plate for the cylinder I have, but eventually he made one and I finally got the parts sent off. I did my best to clean up the saw but she was still a little dirty ;)

Mike made sure to ask me what the plans were and he went to work. I received a couple pics today and we chatted on the phone. Can't say enough good about the work and the guy, glad I sent my cylinder over his way it was worth the effort. Can't wait for the next couple days to go by, hopefully the post office is fast.

I will send more work mike's way in the future.

As everyone has said above, Mike is a straight shooter. I had Mike do my 394XP and its an animal. He has my dads ol 288XP and an 066 ready to ship home. He's been in touch with me through all the builds and told me any problems he's run into along the way. I've only talked to him twice on the phone and it was a pleasure both times. Otherwise we text almost everyday, about saws, work, life or anything.

I’m hoping to be able to send either my Stihl 044 or Husky 288XP to Mike in the near future!
You won't be sorry if you have him do your 288. Mine's a beast for sure.
