I have been installing Vgroove bead board on the ceilings in my house and whitewashing. I have come to the living room. Where my stove meets the ceiling there is a box. I am wondering if I can come right up on to the flange of the box with the bead board or if I need to stay off of it?

Agreed again.
What's the box for?

Most I've seen are just a hollow box that transitions through the ceiling joists or floor above, with the flue pipe centered running through it. I suppose some may have insulation around the centered flue pipe filling the transition box to help minimize heat transfer into the ceiling, or floor above, etc.

Maybe have some tile between the beadboard and box?

Look up some manufacturer's specs. I just looked and the stove we installed a couple years back, the box is about a quarter inch off the attic flooring. I can't really remember details at this point, but I'm certain we would have done the homework at the time and installed it to spec.

Those boxes provide two functions. First they act as a support for your pipe. Second they maintain minimum clearance to combustibles. They should not have any insulation in them between the sheetmetal and the stove pipe.

interesting- yeah I thought it was to act as kind of a flange and conceal that the drywall was cut larger than the pipe going thru. I never checked to see if it got hot or not.

My old friend has a box like that and it can get warm best to back off from it a bit.

I have that type of chimney system in the house and shop. The box is mounted to wood above the ceiling. It doesn't get hot enough to worry about. In the shop I have OSB board for a ceiling & it covers the flange of the box.
