Well the clutch cover doesnt fit, the one I got has the tabs like the old 262. Will a 55 clutch cover fit on the 254 like it will a 262?
yes, but you gotta cut it a bit so it fit.

And I aint going to cut the tabs off...
agree, 254/257/262 clutch cover isnt that easy to find, they're pricey on da marked.

It shares alot of parts with the 55
254 is a beatiful saw, everyone craved for the 262. I'm probleby weird, but I'll take a 254 over a 262 anyday.
55 parts for 254, fuel tank, front handle bar, clutch & drum, probleby forgot some also.

Yeah, its a '99. The first 3 are of the later one that I scrounged parts off my FG carcass, the later pics. The cover fits that one fine.

Tom,

Take a real god look at the center section of the clutch.

I’ve had seemingly good clutches never tighten because of a cracked center section that would expand under load.

May not be your issue, but it costs nothing to disassemble and take a peek.

I’ll never start an outboard clutch again without a clutch cover on a saw. I launched an NLA 262 clutch into the woods (after it exploded into pieces) which took multiple magnets and prayers to Saint Anthony to get back.

@drf256 , you prayed to the right man! Its a first for me. I dont see a crack, doesnt mean there is not one that under load expands. I have another that I might try. Waiting for a 55 clutch cover now to see what I need to cut to make it fit.

@Tor R , what is it that you want to see?
I'm most currious to see detail pictures of the Nordfeller system. I think you should try to rebuild that saw as close as you can to it's original state, you'll have one of the most unique saw on OPE if so.

Nordfeller is a Jonsered development, Jonsered was the company who most of the time developed important things, like the chain brake, air injection, and if my memory is correct, AV springs.

Not saying 254 Nordfeller has exactly the same parts as 162 Nordfeller had, but it's the only part list available.

I know it has strong compression. Every once in a while you'll see one come through. I'll get you some pics this afternoon after we pick up our Xmas tree.

254 clutches.
There is a few clutches who work perfectly on 254/262, one is a bolt on clutch, the others need the 262 clutch washer.
357/359 clutch is a bolt on clutch, no need for the 262 washer.
Another clutch is the 562 clutch, but you'll need the 262 washer for that one.
A 550 clutch will also work as long as we use the 262 washer.

@Tor R , here are some pics. Let me know if you want to see somthing else. I dont think the generator works, hence they cut the lines to the handle, top and rear. You can see what they did to the Mordfeller attachment.

The FG has a special cylinder with a connector valve coming off the top that you could open/close, similar to the decomp valve. At the bottom of the valve was a hose barb that would run to an inflatable wedge. The idea was you would stick the inflatable wedge into the tree, connect it via hose to the saw, open the valve, and the saw would inflate the wedge. By the pictures, looks like most of the FG apparatus has been removed.

I’d be very interested to see the size of the combustion chamber inside the FG model, if you ever take the cylinder off. Just for my own edification, because the very early 254 cylinders had small combustion chambers. I’d also love to know what the casting marks on the bottom sides of the cylinder show: is it a KS or a Mahle cylinder, and what is the code?
