I snagged up a Poulan model 68 chainsaw with a nice big bow bar on it a few weeks back. I must hear it run... I checked the piston, and it looks good (3 ring piston). Everything "visually" checks out, but I am not getting spark. I am assuming it could probably stand a new set of points and a condenser. Anyone know what part numbers I need to be searching for? I don't really want to rip it apart until I have the parts for it. There are too many half stripped, waiting for parts saws in there already...

Clean the points as guido said.as far a condensor.....a condensor is a condensor.find one the same size and install it.points well for a saw that old it could be a challenge finding them.

Yes, after a long time even the tungsten contacts get an oxide coating.
I use a soft and then a hard arkansas stone to polish them.

Cool, thanks for the advice. I just got my Pioneer 600 running by replacing the condenser. It was easy to find. I was hoping to do the same with this one. I guess I'll pull it apart and see what I need.

If you have a NAPA store with racks of parts books and an old geezer behind the counter you can find what you need. Just take the old stuff with you.

Well, I went to pull it all apart and once the flywheel was off, I saw the coil wire had come out of the coil. I grabbed some high tension wire I had purchased for another project and ran a new coil wire. I cleaned the points, and now it is throwing lightning bolts! It still would not start. I pulled the carb apart and the metering diaphragm was stiff as a board. I ordered a carb kit. Maybe it will be running soon. Thanks for the helpful advice!

Anyone know where I can get the grommets for the carb adjustment screws?

Look in the yellow compartment boxes at your Ace Hardware. The electrical aisles. Table lamp part actually.

Carb kit came in and now it is running! I will clean up the bow bar and put that 1/2" chain back on it next. Then it will be ime to tune it in some wood. Hopefully the new bar for my Pioneer 600 will come in tomorrow and I can tune them both!
