So I've got this stupid idea to build an alcoholic. So far this build has started with the intake and will be built around that. It will likely end up with a two piece head.
On the right is the stock reeds, and on the left is what will replace em.

The platform on this model is ideal for this type of modification.

Fabricating the intake mount plate will be the most time consuming part of this build. I started with this...

And a day later it looks like this...

Here's the carb in place. I built the throttle rod last night but didnt get a pic before tear down.

The flywheel side bearings are blown and need replaced before I can proceed. But for now I have to set this project aside in order to get an 026 ready for shipping.

Very cool build going here. Jim you always seem to be outside the curve on these type of projects. That carb surely will flow enough juice to feed the beast. Question do alky saws have much different timing then gas saws? What about spark timing is that different too?

I should also mention I'm a fish out of water when it comes to methanol burning racers, and this will be my first attempt.
Hopefully I'll be able to answer those questions sometime soon, lol.

I guess it doesn't run too bad with only the carb upgrade. It's still running stock muffler and stock port timing. Off the roll factory ground chain. At least I have it back together so I can set it aside for a couple days while I get a sweet little 026 finished up.

Great thread Jim. Subbed in for this one for sure.
Thanks.
This thing has a ways to go. It'll need a boost port added, and likely a two piece head to boost the compression. With the thin ring piston, it doesn't run the highest compression to begin with.

I was under the impression that with the thin ring cranking comp showed slightly lower then its thick ring counterparts. The dynamic or running comp was the same (all other things equal). Makes a guy wonder if we are not also giving ourselves inaccurate info with stihls 1.2 mm rings compared to huskys 1.5. But then most stihls have 2 rings. I am of the thinking that cranking comp from thin rings isnt that far off from a equal dual 1.2 mm ring piston. I guess ive heard one way and think another.

I know one thing for sure a thin ring engine even with only 150psi feels like 200 lol.

Lots of huskies have 1.2 mm rings

See that shows my inexperience with those models then. Ive never worked on one with 1.2mm rings only stihls.

The older Huskies mainly ran a single 1.5mm ring, then for a while they had two 1.5mm rings (i.e. 394, 272, even the latest 288s). Now most run two 1.2mm rings (i.e. 372, 385/390, 295). The 3120 still runs two 1.5mm rings and the smaller saws run a single. You can also still get the single ring piston for 372.

I got the squish from .065" down to .023". That seems to have helped a little. I also added a pair of boost ports. The timing is a little too advanced and there's an air leak at the intake. And I think it may have started overheating there at the end. All in all I'd say it made a good improvement with overall power. The chain is straight off the roll full comp with factory grind, so there is a lot of room for improvement there too.

Wow that saw is running great. Looking forward to seeing it all done.

I'm happy so far.
All the fins on the back of the cylinder needed cut shorter for clearance so a heat shield will fit in between it and the carb, but never installed the heat shield. It sure didn't like it when that carb heated up, lol.

I haven't burned any alcohol in it yet and still need to have a pipe made.
