it's a long way to go before I have one complete 242 in new parts lol
Miss vital parts like fuel tank, crankcase, crank, oil pump, xpg parts, carb, some screws etc.
Who knows, maybe I one day will be able to build a new 242 XPG :D

For those who own one 254/257/261 and 262.
357/359 clutch is bolt on, same thread and clutch diameter.
And it seems that 555/560/562 clutch has the same thread and clutch diameter as well, it's almost like a copy of the 357 clutch.

I dont know whitch one who is the strongest clutch, 562 vs 262, but before or later that 262 clutch will be NLA and if we can use the 562 clutch instead of the weaker 261 two shoe clutch......

All my 254's will get either 357 or 562 clutch.

I might try a 562 clutch in the 262 that Dad bought off of Randy eventually. That said, the 2 shoe has yet to slip even in Hedge so we're good for now.

Wow tough one:) 288 for me or 2100. And that is splitting hairs....
I have yet to see a 288 first hand as it has an attitude problem and a lumpy idle, but the 2100 is a fun saw to play with. More likely though a built 390xp or 395xp will be in the future for me. I really like the feel and attitude of a built 390, but I keep seeing these vids of Randy's 395's... :campeon::pesas::2guns:

even they are weaker you can also use 550 clutch, has the same threads and diameter.
Thought to try 357/562 clutch on one of my 262's and 357/562 on one of my 254's. Also hope to test out one 550 clutch, it's lighter them the two other kinda currious if 254 spool up faster

I hadn't thought of that... If the 262 that Randy built spooled up any faster, it would be near scary. Blipping the saw might also be dangerous for the crank, con rod and bearings...

Not that I wouldn't be willing to carefully try it, if/when the 2 shoe ever acts up.
my first choice would be the 3 shoe clutch from either 357/359 or 555/560/562 if I have to swap clutch.
When 550 arrived in 2011 it had a 3 shoe clutch, 574 23 61 01, nowadays I belive the clutch is updated to 574 23 61 04.
In around 12 or something they swapped the 3 shoe clutch over to 2 shoe clutch, one who is very similuary to 346 clutch.

What I like with those Huskies is that we can swap around parts who isnt written in the book :)

266se w/272 jug N slug. New OEM crank N bearings. Saw was a ground up restoration.
272xp, gonna get reworked this winter even tho it screams.
288xp,,frankensaw! 4 saws in one.
Ran a gal fuel thru it Monday without a hiccup..
Think all the gremlins are gone!
Finally I'm a happy camper, warm and fuzzy feeling after that last tank of fuel.

You are the second person to tell me the prefer the handling and feel of the 2 rather than the 3. Are the 372's the one with the plastic cage bearings?

Both 272 and 372 are great saws and i am a huge fan of the 2xx series saws. With that said, the 372 is smoother, faster and a legendary piece of machinery. They wouldnt still be available if they weren't. My ported 262 out cut two 372's while bucking firewood but port a 372 and it would be a different story. I believe the deciding factor for most guys are AV systems.

272 inboard clutch makes it feel smaller. 281 doesn't feel much bigger than a 372 but it is heavier. I have a 266xpg and a 288 for the moment that may lose some cc.

I've been talking to a lot of folks about it and I think I'm settled in on a 372XP OE. I'm in no hurry to buy one so I will wait until I find a nice one. Thanks for the input guys!
