Ive been using an ivy blocker made by Rainbow if I know I will be into ivy or oak. Works well.

I don't think you actually need to barber chair and leave them like that though. That's just sloppy. I clean up all my downed trees, and the deer still love my network of trails.

[EDIT] For PI, Ive been having pretty good luck just scrubbing down regular dish old soap. But Im not super allergic to it either.
