Please everyone be incredibly careful with pets and antifreeze! Last night we had to put down the dog in my avitar "Jemma". The night before she was in the garage with me and I heard her lap 3 or 4 times at a bucket of antifreeze. She was close to 100lbs and I thought she would be fine because she barely drank any compared to her size. When I got off work yesterday it was obvious that she was not ok. I took her to the pet hospital but it was too late, her kidneys where already shutting down. The doc told me that they have medicine that can be effective if an animal ingests antifreeze but it is only effective within the first few hours. I feel horrible that I left an open bucket of antifreeze where she could get at it and I am only posting this because I don't want anyone to have to go through this and feel the way I feel.

Thats what makes me feel worse is that I knew that too, I just didn't realize how little it takes to become a very big issue.

My condolences go out to you. Years ago someone fed my neighbors dog a hand full of dog treats soaked in coolant, they threw the paper bag over the fence. Dog was dead 6 hours later. That stuff is bad, especially cause it has that sweetness to it.

Thank you all for the kind thoughts! She was 9 years old, which is fairly old for her breed, and she was starting to show her age so I knew she wasn't going to be around for much longer. It's still painful though.

It is sweet... I had a radiator cap blow off and got antifreeze on my lips and mouth area. I was surprised by the taste and how sweet it is.

Should have skull and bones on the front label. Most don't realize how toxic it is to mammals and storm water runoff. Kills fish, amphibians and small mammals in the water system.

I had a kitten hanging around while i was servicing my pick up years ago she did the same.
I had thought that in latter years they were required to add something to anti freeze to make it bitter to prevent animals from drinking it.

One thing I read years ago, if you can't get to the hospital in a short period of time, start chugging vodka, and have someone come get you. Apparently your body will process the vodka first, and it will delay the poisoning long enough to get you medical treatment. Either way, it's nasty stuff, and I agree with everyone above - it needs a stronger warning label.
