For sale locally... just not sure what model it is, and if it’s worth the $40 asking price? Thanks

Zoomed in on the top cover, and looks like a “2” on what’s left of the badge... which could imply that it is a 1-42... of course, the top cover may not be original to the saw...

I also notice that on this saw the handle doesn’t loop down to the bottom of the saw... is that lower part of the handle removable?

The lack of handle strap had me wondering if it's a 1-43, but it can be removed on many models.

Anybody understand McCulloch’s model numbering system? To me there is no rhyme or reason to it.

Just read 'for sale locally'.
An hour away... but my “local” Craigslist.

No doubt about! To me a 250 looks like a 1-40 with a different AF cover.

Here is a 1-42. Well used and filthy. Been on the shop floor for over 30 years. Got it to run for about 5 seconds about 5 years ago. Spins freely, super low compression. Have no idea where the clutch/bar cover is. Ran .404 chain.

I have a couple 250's, and a 1-43 and 1-46 for sure. I might have a 1-42. The differences aren't drastic between them all, but there are some.

Also, since so many parts interchange, and they're over 50 years old, it's possible that the one you are looking at has been modified in its life.

The manual Oiler on the 1-40 is on the front by the handlebar, instead of on the back of the carb box, where it is on all the others.
