Tomorrow's competition...a 2007 PS-630 Dolmar with a 7910 piston and cylinder.

I figured an old modded 79cc against a new 79cc would be a decent measuring stick for this saw.

The MS500 is very similar in size with the 64/73/79XX Dolmars.

I think the 500i is going to have to be special to unseat the 7900/10. Looking forward to your thoughts on this one Dan.

So, the landowner postponed on me until tomorrow. I totally forgot today was a holiday here.

Plan B: went to another patch of land where I've been saving a couple of decent sized stumps in chit conditions.

The area has been burned before, there's a lot of sandy dirty conditions and some semi-dry thick barked pine....let's see how the filtration is.

After cutting around 8 cookies off a 14+" pine log in the backyard.

And, after 4 cuts in crap conditions cutting stumps and cutting about 4 cookies.

Uh... I think that filter system is not so promising.. Wood chips like that shouldn't appear on the filter..

I've got a couple of complaints, which are common with Stihl saws--it's oil stingy and fines are getting past the filter seal.

Mandatory to "push the pin in" with the MS500i. Even with a 20" bar I wasn't happy with the oiling on max. Maybe it's just my saw...:roto2nuse:

Some fines...

I wouldn’t worry too much about not getting a 25” es light. Your 24/25” tsumura is a little lighter anyways.

I’m curious to see how this saw runs when fully broken in.

Good to know on the 24 Tsumura weight, Pat. I was hoping to run it with the 25" Light as that seems the be the standard offering from Stihl for the 500.

Couldn't agree more. The 500 is a strong saw, but the 79XX is a big measuring stick.

I'm not so worried about the wood chips, Adam. Yes, this filter will need a lot of attention (and often) from the operator.

The fines are my concern. I'm already thinking of what a work around for the 1/4 turn tool-free filter cover knob.

IMO the filter cover may not be putting enough pressure on the filter to create an adequate seal at the flange.

Pressure from the filter cover won’t change how it seals as long as the cover is holding it tight enough to make good contact with the foam sealing washer around the twist lock post. The filter lip seal contacts the shoulder/flange on the filter base independent of pressure holding it on. Grease will help on the seal lip and the foam ring.

Maybe cut a piece of ring shaped cloth and put it under the rubber filter base seal to fill the gap?

Protomagia keeps you out of business Dan.Nice saw,it is sad that 1500€ saw let fine dust past the air filter but it won't make any difference in saws life.

I'll bet the 500 is a lot lighter than that Dolly!!! Over a pound will make a bit difference on a day you have to do a lot of limbing.

Definitely going to put some grease around the seal and see if it makes a difference, AJ.

Exactly, Kostas. The addition of air injection is a big improvement, but IMO not what you would expect on a saw with this price tag.

A lot of guys that cut in better conditions probably won't notice any problem. Our conditions are hot, dry and dusty in most of the cutting environments.

Yes, there is a noticeable little difference. But then again, if someone chooses to outfit the 500 with larger felling spikes and clutch cover, it'll gain some weight.

IMHO the filter works fine.
You just need to know where the filter seals.
Look at the red marked lines. This is where the filter seals on the plate and between these areas are no exlcluding the ones that came there when you take off the filter.
You can assist the whole thing by putting some grease on these areas.
