To add to my last post: the 390 seemed quicker in the pine, but in the oak the 288 seemed to take the 390...

394 is the undisputed stomper though! Man I love the sound of those! Hard to believe it's only 6-7cc more than the other two. The way it runs you would think the gap was larger.

Its not a battle. It's an ass beating. The 288 is a classic, but not as strong as the 394, I'll take a 390/395 any day over a 288.the vibes of the 288 are a lot compared to a 3 series and what bars are we talking? I'll never put anything smaller than a 32 on a 385/390/288/394/395. For me they are only needed from 36-42 and the 395 vs 394 battle is something I can't decide on...

I've got a 288 and a 395. The 395 is a heck of a saw smooth with loads of power and torque, but it is a heavy sob, and it handles like a cinder block.
The 288 is close in power, but handles a lot better. Imo, it is much better suited for falling and limbing. Even though it's just a few cc's smaller than the 395, it handles more like a 70cc. As a matter of fact, it really doesn't feel that much heavier than my 372.

You're right, the 288 does have an almost cult-like following, but it is one saw that lives up to its reputation.

I agree, the 394/5 do have heft to them. I use one at work now and again, even occasionally up in the bucket to lop off larger "branches" from a large roadside hard maple that are too much for the 346 I use most often to quickly and cleanly take care of. It's not something I like to do very often and fortunately the need doesn't arise very often.

I have a saying ..... "Those folks that own a 394 have run a 395. Those folks that own a 395 have never run a 394."

Speaking strictly STOCK .... the 394 has the stones that make a 395 whimper.

I am building a 288 right now and will try it out before sending ot off to the spa ....
I want a 394!! Lol

I prefer the 288 myself and I always get more money out of the 394 395 when I sell one.
