Alright guys, being a person who has been fairly recently infected with a hopelessly severe case of CAD, I have noticed alot of love (if not a cult following) for the 288xp. Seems as though the 394 enjoys something similar but not to the same extent.. It certainly seems to be favored over the 395 by a fair amount of people here.

I'm curious as to how you guys think they compare against each other. Granted, the 394 enjoys a relatively small advantage in displacement. But putting that aside, what do you guys like? Pros and cons? Which one is better stock? How about modded? Is the 288 one of those freak success stories that punches above it's weight class?? I would like to see an open discussion on this topic. Got a vid of your ported 288?? Post it up! Same for you 394 owners...

I am about to embark on a rebuild and mod to include porting on a 1993 model 394. Wondering if a 288 should be on my "list" or if it's pointless being that I have the 394.

I look forward to reading the content posted on this topic. :)

Fire away gents!

I have a saying ..... "Those folks that own a 394 have run a 395. Those folks that own a 395 have never run a 394."

Speaking strictly STOCK .... the 394 has the stones that make a 395 whimper.

I am building a 288 right now and will try it out before sending ot off to the spa ....

I love hearing that Jason, never gets old. :campeon:

I own a 394. It's a beast saw. All I've done is a base gasket delete and dual port the muff. It really don't need more! :pesas: I've also run Rodney's 288. I'm one of them guys that has an affinity for the 288. It's kinda like havin' that old favorite muscle car from your youth sitting in the garage. It ain't got the balls of the 94, but that's not the point. Looks, size, weight, powa... it's all there. Hopefully some day I'll have a nice 'un.

I've had a half dozen of each. Only one I have left is a 395 in a box. 288 is lighter and can be used for limbing and such. A 394/5 will wear on you doing any amount of that work.

I was cleaning my 394 up a little bit today. Had the muffler off and looked inside. Looks like it's going to be a piece of cake adding the second port. Nice big flat area on the bar side will work perfect. I plan to use the 288 deflector as I have on both of my other muff mods I've done on my 357 and 372. That deflector is easy to work with and install plus the added benefit of a little 288 voo-doo!

OK so it seems to me that the current 390 being 88cc is a much closer comparison to the 288. And that begs the question: does the 288 relate to the 390 the same way the 394 relates to the 395?? I have noticed that the 390 doesn't seem to be "talked about" like other saws in this size class...
